Error found in Sunflower permit

? Public hearings on the proposed 895-megawatt coal-fired power plant in southwest Kansas will go on as scheduled next week despite an announcement Friday that developers of the plant must revise their permit.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said that meteorological data that Sunflower Electric Power Corp. used in air pollution dispersion modeling did not adjust for differences in time zones.

KDHE said it will take approximately 30 days to receive the revised information. The agency said after that data is reviewed, it will issue an additional public comment period and hold an additional public hearing.

Currently, the public comment period is open until Aug. 15 on the proposed facility to be built near Holcomb. Hearings on Sunflower’s draft permit are scheduled for Monday in Overland Park, Wednesday in Salina and Thursday in Garden City.

In a news release, Sunflower said the time-adjustment problem was found in software that the EPA required.
