Academy honoring 100-year-old Stuart

Los Angeles — Gloria Stuart lives like her days are numbered, and little wonder. The Oscar-nominated actress, best known as Old Rose in the 1997 blockbuster “Titanic,” turned 100 on July 4.

“I would say I don’t notice the difference between 100 and, say, 90,” Stuart said while sitting in the bonsai-lined garden of her home in the Brentwood district of Los Angeles. “You’re still frail, feeble, and full of you-know-what,” she continued, with a laugh.

Truth is, the only thing obviously frail about Stuart is her voice, which is just a few decibels above a whisper. And while she moves a little slower than some, Stuart said she still has many things to do and places to go. She prints books. She paints. She gardens.

Thursday night, she was to be honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills for a film career spanning eight decades.

Her first contract was with Universal, where she quickly became a favorite of the legendary James Whale, who would direct two of Stuart’s most highly regarded movies, “The Old Dark House” (1932) opposite Boris Karloff and the hit “The Invisible Man” (1933) opposite Claude Rains.

Singer Justin Bieber to guest star on ‘CSI’

New York — Justin Bieber will guest star in the upcoming season of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”

CBS said in a statement Thursday that Bieber will play “a troubled teen who is faced with a terrible decision regarding his only brother.” He’ll make his “CSI” debut on the season premiere scheduled for Sept. 23.

The network didn’t say how many episodes will include the 16-year-old teen pop sensation, but called his character’s plot line “an emotional story that will conclude later in the season.”

ABC recently announced that Bieber will also make a cameo in the second season of “Shaq Vs.,” the reality competition series with Shaquille O’Neal. The NBA star will visit Bieber and join in a dance crew competition.

Couple charged in death of film producer’s son

Beverly Hills, Calif. — A couple was charged with murder Thursday in the fatal stabbing of a movie producer’s son who had dated one of the suspects.

Scott Joseph Barker, 23, and Chie Alexandra Coggins Johnson, 20, were charged with murdering Katsutoshi Takazato, whose body was found Tuesday outside his father’s home in a normally tranquil and exclusive neighborhood where killings are uncommon.

Takazato’s father, Fuminori Hayashida, produced several movies in the 1990s, including “Lured Innocence” starring Dennis Hopper. Hayashida lives in Japan.

Takazato had until recently dated Johnson, who then started dating Barker. She told her new boyfriend that Takazato had physically abused her, prosecutors said, prompting Barker to become enraged and stab Takazato.

Barker’s attorney, Brad Brunon, declined to comment about the relationship between the victim and both suspects. He said the facts about the case were not yet clear.

Rick Warren recovering from eye injury

Lake Forest, Calif. — Pastor Rick Warren was briefly hospitalized after an eye injury that he suffered while gardening at home.

Warren’s spokesman Larry Ross said the sap of a firestick plant got into Warren’s eyes when he wiped his brow while gardening. The sap can cause temporary blindness, although Ross said Warren can see.

The 56-year-old pastor was treated overnight and released Tuesday from Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. On Thursday, he sent a message to his Twitter followers asking for their prayers.

“My eyes were severely burned,” Warren wrote. “Excruciating pain.”

He is expected to make a full recovery.

Warren is the author of the multimillion-selling book “Purpose Driven Life,” and founder of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest in Orange County.

Orlando Bloom marries model Miranda Kerr

Sydney — Actor Orlando Bloom and model Miranda Kerr have married, her employer said today.

Upscale Australian department store David Jones, which employs the 27-year-old Australian model as a fashion ambassador, said she will not attend a Spring season launch on Aug. 3 because she was honeymooning with the 33-year-old British star of “Lord of the Rings” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

“Given the exiting news that Miranda and Orlando have recently wed and will be enjoying their honeymoon together, Miranda will not be with us” for the launch, David Jones spokeswoman Colette Garnsey said in a statement.

The statement did not say where or when they had married. David Jones would not be commenting on personal aspects of the announcement, that statement said.
