‘Buried Life’ gets brothers closer to 100 goals

? Four years ago, brothers Jonnie and Duncan Penn decided to make a list of everything they dreamed of doing in their life. The “100 things to do before they die” list ranged from helping a stranger to getting a college degree.

No. 54 looked to be a big challenge: The Victoria, British Columbia, natives wanted to have their own TV series.

They can scratch that goal off the list.

The brothers, along with buddies Dave Lingwood and Ben Nemtin, are featured in the new MTV documentary series “The Buried Life” (9 p.m. Monday on Sunflower Broadband Channel 65). The series follows the friends as they try to accomplish their goals.

Nemtin says: “We started this in 2006. We took two weeks off work, borrowed an RV, bought a camera. The momentum of the project started to build. We started getting e-mails from people all over the world, ‘I saw your list online. I can help you. Here’s my list. Can you help me?”‘

First on their list was to open the local 6 p.m. newscast, something many people told them was impossible. Within two weeks they had accomplished that goal and knew they had started something they didn’t want to stop.

Items on their list include playing basketball with President Barack Obama, attending a party at the Playboy mansion, paying off their parents’ mortgages and giving a million dollars to a worthy cause.

The guys may have reached a little too far with some of the items: No. 100 is to go into outer space. Hitting the hardwood with the President, No. 95, could happen.

“We were actually in D.C. two weeks ago, and through hustling, we ended up meeting with three congressmen, two senators, and one secretary,” Lingwood says. “And the secretary of transportation has given his endorsement to let us play with Obama, which doesn’t mean we’re going to do it, but it helps.”

As to the show’s title, it was inspired by Matthew Arnold’s 1852 poem in which he suggests day-to-day minutia often buries our real lives and we each have a desire to live our “Buried Life.”

The four buddies are getting to do just that.
