Interstate 35 southbound was closed from mile marker 187 to 199 after a multiple-vehicle accident just after 7 a.m. in Franklin County Saturday morning.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, there was one fatality during the incident, though the name and victim information was not yet available. The accident occurred near mile marker 199, just south of Gardner about 7:24 a.m.

The accident involved 19 vehicles, six of which were semi-trucks. The highway patrol said the incident was actually one in a series of three or four accidents that occurred in a chain-reaction manner. About 30 total vehicles were involved.

As of 9:40 p.m. Saturday all previously-closed portions of Interstate 35 had been reopened.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.

carseats save lives, and it's to bad this little boy was not restrained, because he may have made it.

And why am I not surprised about this either ? Shame for the little boy to have to lose his life due to the negligence of others but, given the intelligence level of these individuals who did not care enough about him to protect him, perhaps heaven is a better place for him. I am sure that Craig Davis will ensure those responsible are properly prosecuted.

Thanks Py for the link. The child's parents are going to be going though a tough time after this. I hope they have support and learn to forgive themselves. Something this acute is burned into the neurons of the brain and will always be there readied to be triggered by something. You don't ever get over the death of a child, but you can get though it.

folks need to learn how to drive in this kinda of weather.

The God I worship will forgive these parents. We all make mistakes, some of them tragic, but there is nothing that God in His infinite mercy will not forgive. I will pray for them that they find a measure of peace so they can continue to love those in their lives who still need them.

PitBullGrandma, fortunately the franklin county sheriff's department will not work the major part of this accident. I would be surprised if they did anything but direct traffic. secondly, it is not up to craig davis to prosecute anyone, that is up to the county attorney's office. Hopefully davis just stayed at home.

I am wondering why all are assuming the child was not buckled. People die buckled all the time. And why would you put a parent in jail for this (unless the parent was driving impaired.)

"The accident involved 19 vehicles, six of which were semi-trucks. The highway patrol said the incident was actually one in a series of three or four accidents that occurred in a chain-reaction manner. About 30 total vehicles were involved." Say what? 19 to start ended, with about 30. Where did the other about 11 come from?

srj, the child was 'unrestrained' according to the story from the ottawa newspaper.

a horrible shame.

that occurred in a chain-reaction manner. About 30 total vehicles were involved.

wow, just wow. six semis involved. I start thinking of "Dual" with Dennis Weaver in it. very scarey.

child unrestrained. some parent made a wrong, illegal, choice.
yes Irish God can forgive but read Romans chapter 13, there is a government with laws to punish such actions.
