Four Tennessee basketball players — Tyler Smith, Melvin Goins, Cameron Tatum and Brian Williams — will not play in Sunday's game against Kansas, according to GoVolsXtra.com.

In fact, the site is reporting, all-conference player Tyler Smith has been dismissed from the team, with the ultimate dispensation of the other players still pending.

The four players were suspended over a New Year’s Day arrest involving guns and marijuana.

This is disappointing. If Kansas loses the game, they'll be stuck with the "overrated" label. If Kansas wins, they'll be dismissed because "Tennessee couldn't put its best team on the court."

This ruins the purity of the game by just wrecking the spread!

Agreed Thinking. But all that 'overrated' garbage will have to be thrown out the window when KU enters Big 12 play, which is arguably the best league this year.

We are going to win. Even if they had their pot-head, gun totin' players on the court, we would still win.

Jayhawks could never be overrated.

Dumb: open container of alcohol in car

Dumber: weed in the car

Dumb squared: handguns and ammo in the car

Dumb raised to power of ten: one handgun with serial number filed off

Not that any of this is surprising or new to hear about. With the millions of dollars coaches are making they really do a craptacular job guiding their players. When a coach recruits a young person who may have not been surrounded by the best influences I strongly assert the coach has an obligation to keep a sharp eye on the student/player.

Coaches make millions and Univ TN has the typical huge athletic department infrastructure. Yet they could not keep these young men out of trouble even DURING the basketball season.

A counterargument will be made that the young men are responsible for their own behavior not the coaches. I agree that ultimately the young men are responsible for their behavior but my main point is that coaches and assistant coaches are not doing what it takes to maintain discipline and learn how not to make INCREDIBLY stupid decisions.

It is often claimed by coaches that recruiting young men who are not academically ready for college and have a troubled past that by giving them a scholarship they are getting a chance they wouldnt other wise have.

Thus, because that claim has been made repeatedly then there is an extra burden on the coaches and their staff to be viigilant and proactive to keep these kids out of trouble. History shows that coaches have failed this responsibility in an epic fashion.

If you are going to aggressively recruit thugs, don't act surprised when they act like thugs.
