Highlights: KU vs. Cal

Kansas defeated Cal, 78-63 on Wednesday Dec. 22, 2010 at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. Enlarge video

— Ho ho ho and mistletoe? Peace on earth, good will toward men?

Kansas University’s basketball players obviously were saving those sentiments for today through the weekend, not Wednesday night during an intense, heated — call it a Scrooge-like — 78-63 victory over California in Haas Pavilion.

To summarize ...

Marcus Morris was ejected from the game for elbowing Cal’s Harper Kamp in the face with 17:23 to play.

Brady Morningstar was tagged with a technical foul for popping the ball out of Brandon Smith’s hands during a second-half stoppage of play, and Thomas Robinson was flagged for a ‘T’ along with Cal’s Jorge Gutierrez for a heated second-half exchange.

Oh yes, Robinson committed an intentional foul on Gutierrez in the first half, one in which KU — thanks to 13 points from Josh Selby and Markieff Morris — led 38-30 at the break.

“I thought it was ridiculous,” KU coach Bill Self said of KU’s players acting up during their 11th victory in as many tries. “We obviously contributed greatly to it. Cal was chippy also. We didn’t handle it well.”

The Jayhawks had things under control when Marcus Morris left the game with KU up, 47-35. Cal would cut the gap to four points, 47-43, at 15:27, before the Jayhawks righted the ship and won going away.

Markieff Morris by game’s end had 21 points, while Tyrel Reed had 18 and Josh Selby 18.

But everybody wanted to talk about the chippy plays in the game.

Self said he was “really disappointed in Marcus,” who Self said “got what he deserved.”

Morris will not be suspended for the next game.

“The thing that bothers me is when guys put their own agenda ahead of the team. That’s very very selfish,” Self said. “It was about as bad a basketball play as I’ve seen,” he added of the play leading to Cal immediately getting back in the game.

“Marcus is going to get punished big-time,” Self said undoubtedly ready to put some players on the early-morning treadmill after returning from holiday break the night of the 26th. “He’s not the only one. Brady knocking the ball out of the guy’s hands. On the positive front, it’s probably the most fun game we have played all year. Our guys liked that. We competed hard after it got close. When it is chippy, you need to beat them on the scoreboard. We need to mature. We don’t have a mature team and we have known that from the beginning. They are competitive, though.”

He said the chippy behavior is “because of the twins. They’ve got to wake up. We have to mature in some ways. They are competitive.”

The thing that bothered Self most? “That we felt we had to get the last word in,” he said of Morningstar committing the final ‘T’ of the night poking the ball away.

Marcus Morris headed to the bus and didn’t speak with reporters after the game.

Thomas Robinson noted: “It’s a physical game. You get hit sometimes. I went after the ball. He went after the ball. That was it. I got hit. I don’t know if it was intentional or not.

“Coach said he was mad at some dumb plays. We have to be smarter on the court.”

Markieff Morris said of his brother’s ejection: “I didn’t see what happened. You never want to get in the position you have to leave the game.”

Selby didn’t start, but he did play 17 minutes the first half, exploding for 13 points off 5-of-6 shooting, including 3-for-3 from three-point distance. Markieff Morris also had 13 in 15 minutes as the Jayhawks took a 38-30 lead into halftime.

Just four Jayhawks scored in the entire half. Tyrel Reed hit a pair of threes in four tries, while Marcus Morris also had six points.

Cal led KU, 8-5, but then was hit hard by an 18-5 KU run. Markieff Morris scored nine points and Selby six.

KU’s biggest lead of the half was 11 points at 36-25.

• KU center Jeff Withey did not play because of coach's decision.

It seemed to me that Cal were in a 'get under their skin and get them out of rhythm' situation right from the get go. Saying that our guys should not get drawn into those situations, definitely a long and interesting night!

Martin Shupert 7 years, 5 months ago

I think the one thing that has been lost in the discussion over the chippiness is just how badly Tyshawn Taylor played. Get ready for another phase in which he claims he doesn't know his role. He played like he had no clue what his role was. Meantime, Reed was spectacular and he definitely deserves to start. Selby obviously opens up a place for Reed on the court and closes one off for Taylor. Morningstar and Reed also seem to handle less playing time with a better attitude than TT does. This should be interesting to watch. Selby is flat out amazing though, isn't he?

As much as I like our team to show class and keep a cool head, I am not mad at the performance we had last night. I think we showed heart and we fought for a win. In the past we have been the type of team to just lay down and show no emotion in the heat of the battle. Especially in the "Roy Williams Era", we fought it out, went for the battle and left it on the court. Would those fouls have been called on the playground? NOPE! Could it have been handled better? yes.... but I think a little emotion and grit is a good thing on the court.

cg1029 7 years, 5 months ago

You are dead wrong... The way you show emotion is by beating Call by 40 instead of 15-18. This was not a playground game, it was a regular season contest on TV and we looked like we could not handle the pressure that CAL put on us. If that was a team that had any basketball talent we would have taken our first loss last night.

Sparko 7 years, 5 months ago

Nice idea. Not practical. This one got away from the refs. Lots of pushing and punching away from the ball. California was prodded by their coach to show "toughness." This was a good win and learning experience. But the refs let this get ridiculous.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 5 months ago

you sir are dead wrong beat a team by 40 and learn nothing!

mom_of_three 7 years, 5 months ago

I agree with you. Although Marcus got carried away with that elbow and Brady just did stupid, the rest of it was just part of the game, and face it, Cal got away with some stuff (we did, too), but I also blame the refs for not setting the right tone. KU has 4 fouls in less than 3 minutes and Cal thinks, hhmm, play time.
Cal coach does not seem as upset about the game as Self does. The Cal coach said he didnt know KU was that physical. Has he watched any tape?? It will be interesting to see how Cal reacts to future physical opponents. I don't think this will be the last time their wil be chippiness at their games.

jelwezy_11 7 years, 5 months ago

We have to remember this was their FIRST real away game. It was a battle and I could hear over the announcers the horrible things the fans were saying to our players, it was pretty poor. Any different then what Mizzou fans say? probably not.... but, as much as I love my Jayhawks I always have to take a reality check that they are 18-22 year old guys. But, this is a great teaching tool for Self if he has not had to deal with how to handle emotion, poor refs, out of control fans, and hostile environments. Here is his chance. I am just glad we got the win. I know we are going to lose a game here soon, at least I think we need to lose before the tournament to make our run. (Just don't want it to be a home game!!!!!)

slowplay 7 years, 5 months ago

It doesn't hurt to get a little rough and tough at times. The only 2 plays I disagreed with were the Marcus elbow and Brady's cheap little ball swat. Other than that it was a great effort. Marcus has got to learn how to retaliate with his body and not his elbows. Hard bumps in the post, keep the elbows low, and fight hard for the loose balls. Montgomery's teams have always played this way, cheap shots trying to get the opponent off their game. It was their only chance at winning. Self said all the right things to the media but you could tell he liked the aggressiveness and the fact they didn't back down from the cheap stuff. This KU team is coming together. There will be more rough stuff before the season is over and they will respond appropriately.

Martin Shupert 7 years, 5 months ago

Marcus' elbow was absurd. He probably should miss the next game. Morningstar's ball poke was understandable, but stupid. The guy was in his face. Brady should have just started walking to the bench through the guy with his hands back, let him know we're not backing down, and give the Cal player the chance to lose his composure. All in all, Cal was set on getting right up in our face, and then flopping at the first sign of a push back, a la, what Guttierez did to Robinson on the baseline. That was mishandled so badly, it was absurd. The kid should have been warned to stop the theatrics and play basketball. He later threw at least two punches in the floor scramble and the referees somehow missed that? Amazing. My son said they should rename their team the Cal Floppers. But the Hawks need to grow up quickly or this will happen all the time. Get a grip, Hawks.

Armen Kurdian 7 years, 5 months ago

I agree this was not handled well. Coach Self should have been distracting the refs at the time, freeing up Reed or maybe Taylor to kick some Cal players in the groin. There needs to be more groin kicking in college hoops. maybe if one team gets a T, the other can kick that player in the jimmy. I think that would be more exciting.

Robert Sailler 7 years, 5 months ago

Marcus' flagrant foul will further his reputation as a dirty player. Last night's flagrant foul will alert future refs to watch his play very closely. Look for Morris to spend more time on the bench in future games in foul trouble due to his unnecessary, flagrant foul. And that's The Truth.

Sparko 7 years, 5 months ago

Kidney punch and a hard foul not called on the other end. He lost his cool--but again, calling it both ways would have calmed this down before the fracas. The pony-tailed goon was out of control early and often, and it escalated. Thankfully no one had a trident.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 5 months ago

Truth is KSU fan crying over the fact they will have another behind kickin by KU again this year. Marcus can play with one arm and beat the 4 players left on KSU team by start of big 12.... for years we had teams called soft . reason Self and KU have 2008 trophy is toughness . I have defended Brady on these pages , but last night he went downhill, can take the lousy play here and there but being stupid added on? you better have MM talent. Reed plays tough not stupid.

slowplay 7 years, 5 months ago

"Marcus' flagrant foul will further his reputation as a dirty player. " ????? Where did this come from? I have never read anything remotely suggesting he was dirty player. Care to site a few examples? He is foul prone at times, but your comment is pure speculation or just a plain lie.

jonas_opines 7 years, 5 months ago

Hey, they named themself The Truth. That means that they're right, and doesn't need to back up the assertions. Just accept it.

Nikki May 7 years, 5 months ago

I do think Marcus foul was a maturity thing. I've seen that happen in the grade school games as a reaction, "get off me" and throw the elbow. Reminds you that you should wear a mouth guard I guess.

T Rob's technical is the thing I have an issue with. How can they watch the replay and call that? He was laying flat on his back with the ball in his hands. He even had his mouth closed tight, so he wasn't saying anything. Did I miss where he did something foul worthy?

hbjayhawk 7 years, 5 months ago

For those of you Brady lovers out there, I hope you can see just how terrible of a player he has been this season for KU. We are not playing like a top-10 team lately. We are scratching our way to victory against teams who lose by 30+ to other opponents. Brady needs to sit on the bench. Did you see Coach Self mouth "go take a shower" and give him the exit sign after his stupid technical foul? Too bad he let him back in the game. I am hoping Brady rides the bench as B12 conference play approaches. I'm telling you that this kid was the reason we lost to No. Iowa (watch the film) and he is the reason UCLA, Ariz, and even Cal at one point had a chance.

By the way, Congrats to KU! 2010 Pac-10 Champions!!

slowplay 7 years, 5 months ago

Your are absolutely right. Coach Self has no idea who the best players are on his team and only starts Brady because he secretly wants KU to lose so he can move on to another school. Wow, you really are a better evaluator of talent than the entire KU coaching staff. I'm impressed and can't wait to read your next post on why this is such a rotten team. Keep up the good work.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 5 months ago

wow complete idiot! slowplay such a good name for someone so far off

Brian Conrad 7 years, 5 months ago

sorry slowplay . sarcasm hard on print and tired from late night.

slowplay 7 years, 5 months ago

no Problem. I just get tired of head coach wannabes who don't have a clue. It's pointless to argue.

Richard Payton 7 years, 5 months ago

Just glad KU beat those Cal punks. I saw Jorge Gutierrez punch Thomas Robinson in the face during that loose ball shuffle. The announcer's at first said Gutierrez should have to leave. What's funny then they showed different camera angle's where the punch couldn't be seen. Marcus did deserve the shower but the ref's should have given the shower to Jorge Gutierrez as well. Next time we play California lets bill it as a basketball game and boxing match.

Theprof 7 years, 5 months ago

A couple of Jayhawks played like tatooed thugs too, let's be honest. But hbjayhawk is right. Brady is too slow to play consistently at this level. What is he like 25 years old?

Brian Conrad 7 years, 5 months ago

hmmm 25 so old. Paul Pierce is like his grandfather. most NBA players do not even get going till mid twenties. no excuse Brady is playing horrible.

jayhawklawrence 7 years, 5 months ago

I've got the setup on my tv where I can rewind the play and review it in slow motion. What I saw is that CAL's strategy was to hack and annoy us out of our game. The guy that Marcus elbowed basically crashed into him just prior and was doing stuff like that all night. Jorge was setting up Robinson to make his Oscar winning crash to the floor. They were a bunch of actors and laughing about it on the bench.

One of the twins gets shoved into the glass right in front of the ref and there is no call.

The refs were very unprepared to handle the stuff that they were doing. That is not basketball. That is a less talented team trying to thug their way to a victory.

Any other year and especially on one of Roy's teams, we would not have had as many offensive weapons available to keep us in the game and scoring. We would have gone flat and ugly. That is what is different with this team. There is always someone that can put the ball in the hole.

I remember one year going to Arizona with a Jacque Vaughn led team and Arizona used a similar tactic. We went cold and though we were favored in that game, they knocked us out of the tournament. We were loaded with talent but we could not handle the rough stuff.

We are going to see more of this type of thing and Self has to help sooner or later and get on the Refs and not be so damn polite. One of our guys is going to get hurt.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 5 months ago

Self did the perfect thing. let them play ,do not step in yet. this is non conference learning time. this team made a Giant step forward . they will get rear chewed but learn more from last few games than they did blowing out Memphis. building for a real tournament ready team.. few less stupid plays. . Self has the toughness on this team and beleive me he will teach . this best way to learn . homer refs and cheap shots and they hung in then pulled away for the Rock Chalk to come out loud on Cal's home court ! was beautiful.

Jayhawks1985 7 years, 5 months ago

They obviously know the world is watching them. I think some fouls can't be helped .What do you do when guys are all around you and they are trying to get the ball from you.

Hey, this isn't a volleyball game. We won that's all that matters. Yahoo!

Maybe we just need alot taller guys then their elbows won't get in the other teams faces.

yankeevet 7 years, 5 months ago

KU won; and thats all that fagetaboutit...........

Janet Olin 7 years, 5 months ago

Ugly and immature for both teams from the beginning. Poor officiating. Note to Marcus, Thomas, Brady, and Tyshawn Turnover: you're getting a free education for playing ball. Stop talking and go play; let your game speak for itself.

hammerhawk 7 years, 5 months ago

Me;. I'm saying we should have gotten out the knives and chains. Let's give it to them and the refs. Here I was, in bed after the half and had to get up again to watch the fight and then the rest of the game. And no nap this afternoon. I am mad again. Go Hawks.

Wow does Mr. Selby look like the real deal.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 5 months ago

toughness AND very possibly the best college player... now smarter point guard play and this team can go far. the smartness of play comes through the point guard. TT will get it or Selby will move to point. TT has the talent . now just play smarter , will make your team better and possibility of getting drafted goes way up... better team leader will actually be the SELFish thing in the end.

TopJayhawk 7 years, 5 months ago

Gutierez is a thug. He started this within the first couple of minutes when he was on the floor under one of our guys. He stood up quickly, thrust his butt up in the air, and tried to rack our guy. when he was pushed away, he actually slapped back. Then stuck his nose in the air, sneered and began to talk and laugh. HE did this kind of thing all night. Their coach knew it and let it go.
Then on Robinsons' T. He had a hold of him like an offensive tackle, and leaned into him and tried to just push him out of bounds. Then when the ref. looked, he put his hands straight up, tangled up T Rob's arm and Thomas just pushed him off. Poor sportsmanship, poorer refing. And once again Cals coach shows what little class he has.

TopJayhawk 7 years, 5 months ago

But having said that. T-Rob and TT need to grow the heck up. and just stomp them into the hardwood (basketball wise.)
