Lawrence school board approves teacher contract

A renegotiated work agreement with teachers won unanimous approval from members of the Lawrence school board Monday night.

Now it’s up to members of the Lawrence Education Association — representing more than 900 teachers and other licensed personnel in the district — to determine whether they, too, endorse the renegotiated terms of the contract, which would clear the way for reconfiguration of district schools for next year:

• An additional period for classes at the two high schools, which would have freshmen on campus.

• Transformation of junior highs into middle schools, with grades 6 through 8 instead of 7 through 9.

To help implement the transition, elementary teachers would get a 10 percent increase in planning time. High school teachers would get another 11 minutes per week for planning.

Also in the agreement: 464 teachers — those who have not topped out in their pay scales — would see pay increases for the remainder of the year ranging from $250 to $700.

LEA members are voting this week on the agreement, which had been negotiated by administrators and LEA leaders, with assistance from a federal mediator.

Also during Monday’s meeting, board members:

• Learned that students who have gone through full-day kindergarten — available in eight district elementary schools — have posted increased test scores during the years since then. Administrators plan to continue tracking data as they mull prospects for extending such programs.

• Discussed the effectiveness of the district’s polices and boundaries that govern which students attend which schools in the district.
