Officers respond to a hit-and-run victim early Saturday morning.

Lawrence police are searching for a light-colored car involved in a hit-and-run accident early Saturday morning.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl, an 18-year-old Kansas University student was crossing the street in the 700 block of Massachusetts Street when she was hit about 2 a.m. Hadl said she hit the windshield of the car.

Hadl said the car was a late-2000s model, silver or white and possibly a Toyota Camry. The car fled the scene heading southbound on Massachusetts Street. Witnesses chased the car until they saw a patrol car in the area to report the accident.

Police blocked off Massachusetts Street between Seventh and Eighth streets. The woman was transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries where she was treated and released. Police Sgt. Ted Bordman could not release the victim's name.

Hadl said the car could possibly have front-end or windshield damage. Anyone with information about the accident should call Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS.

silver or white recent model Toyota Camry... good luck not getting caught, but I bet you do.

That is what it looks like. Remember this next election.

law enforcement and the DA have made it CLEAR that this is acceptable behavior in this town. don't even waste my tax dollars looking for the driver, a weeks probation and 4 hours community service will be the punishment IF caught.

Steve Jacob 4 years ago

At least they get nailed in civil court.

somebodynew 4 years ago

I know a lot would like to bash the LE and DA for this trend, but there is a little thing called the LAW involved. It is extremely hard (if not impossible) to charge someone for DUI a couple of days after they were driving (Heck a few hours/minutes will do the trick, if you remember your history here).

Now, should there be much stiffer penalties for leaving the scene, particularly with injuries or death, you bet !!!! But that is up to the legislaturors who write the laws. LE and DA can only "work with what they got", so get on the phone and get new laws on the books.

"crossing the street in the 700-block ..." was she in one of the crosswalks? written this way just makes me wonder.

even if not, Camriman is still now a criminal.
hope they find him and throw the book at him.

and ... I am so glad she has nonlifethreatening injuries! this sure could've ended much worse!

FarneyMac 4 years ago

Witnesses chased the car but still couldn't tell for sure if it was a Camry or not? People are stupid.

gsxr600 4 years ago

^This. You'd think people could give a pristine description after chasing a car, and oh, say a license plate number?!?!?

Kris_H 4 years ago

It's not that easy to get a license number off a car moving away at speed. Try it sometime and then factor in the shock and confusion of an actual scene. BTDT.

peoplewatcher 4 years ago

couldn't have said it better. I mean if you took the time to chase the bloody car at least get the tag!!! come on people!!

tomatogrower 4 years ago

And couldn't they have read the license plate? It could be that the police know whose car it is. They just said to be on the lookout to throw the person off guard. Is punishment for a DUI really worse than leaving the scene of an accident? How could you not stop? If we hadn't gone so overboard in protecting poor little kids self esteem, and told them they could do no wrong, then they might be willing to own up to screwing up.

Beth Ennis 4 years ago

it could also be that they were always too far behind the car and couldn't catch it without being unsafe themselves, other than to keep an eye on the direction it was heading. It's a lot easier said than done. Don't be so critical if you have never been in the situation yourself.

Stuart Evans 4 years ago

maybe the auto manufacturers should install devices that force the car to stall within moments after hitting any object bigger than a cat.

doc1 4 years ago

It would stall after every pothole on Kasold.

Isn't that stretch of road right in the cross-hairs of the channel 6 tower cam? Can't they pull up the footage?

Perhaps some remedial classes would do you good. Even your response to people calling out your nonsense is itself nonsense. Here are some clues so you don't look like such an idiot next time:

"bye" does not equal "by" "to" does not equal "too"

"so do english school MR.WTF and mr.judgementalist get on the article of the matter at hand" does not equal anything that makes sense.

I feel sorry for you, I really do.

I think their points were that YOU might be the one who needs to "do english school."

DillonBarnes 4 years ago

Since your lack of writing skills has already been pointed out, I'll try to figure out your point.

This is what I understand your point to be: Someone got hit by a driver downtown, blame the police.

Is that close?

DillonBarnes 4 years ago

Of course REM sleep isn't really deep sleep, it's mostly associated with Stage 1 sleep where people are more easily awoken.

sissezz 4 years ago

actually downtown is full of people at 2am usually just leavin from the many many bars and hangin out

nobody1793 4 years ago

Nearly all of them. It depends on how good your id is an/or how hot you are.

Ron Holzwarth 4 years ago

For sure, there's nothing like a bit of antifreeze to keep you from freezing to death!

kernal 4 years ago

It's possible the driver's window shield cracked. Keep an eye peeled.

Randall Barnes 4 years ago

sounds like the same car that hit and run my van last month at bar closing time. what if i had been sitting in my van ? probably would have caused injury's but still left the scene.hope she will be ok. has anyone found the fake i.d. ?

John Spencer 4 years ago

Not blaming the victim here but, look both ways!

DillonBarnes 4 years ago

Very true, but that can't stop everything, the person could have quickly pulled out of a parking spot, just turned a corner, or started to slow down for a stop. Gotta keep your head on a swivel just as much as a pedestrian, especially with all the drunk kids driving at that time.

ksarmychick 4 years ago

or their could have been a drunk 18 year old walking out in the street without looking both way 5 feet in front of a moving car.

DillonBarnes 4 years ago

@ ksarmychick

Possibly, that doesn't give the driver the right to leave the scene.

ksarmychick 4 years ago

I never said it gave the driver the right to leave the scene.

mr_right_wing 4 years ago

Forget about the crimestoppers reward money, I'd just love to see this person nailed, and nailed hard. How about bye-bye Kansas DL if convicted? (As opposed to a tap on the wrist.)

bearded_gnome 4 years ago

yeah, take DL, take the car, take any car he/she is found driving in the future.
next offense: firing squad.

would sure cut down on DUI's.

None2, I think he had the alternate meaning of "hot" in mind there. as in "she sure is a hottie!"

but then I am sure that none of the very noble and upstanding doormen/bouncers downtown don't allow in girls because they're "hot."

whatupdown 4 years ago

Make hit and run conviction a one year in county jail no way out and not a day less, no plea deals.
