Imitation and retreads dominate the dial

What’s more difficult than selling a house in a tough market? Selling it when you’ve just had quintuplets! “Quints By Surprise” (9 p.m., TLC) becomes the latest entry in TLC’s parade of series — including “Kate Plus 8” (8 p.m.) — devoted to parents of big broods willing to allow a camera crew in the nursery. And every other room in the house.

Friends since the seventh grade, Ethan and Casey Jones married soon after college and had a 6-year-old daughter when they decided to have another child to celebrate their 10th anniversary. Nine months later, Brooklyn, Ryan, Jack, Britton, and Lila arrived, and the rest is soon to be cable TV history. Episode 1 covers the yard sale they hold in anticipation of selling their Austin, Texas, home in hopes of finding smaller and more affordable quarters. The Joneses may be the first family in television history to “downsize” after having quintuplets.

• The old-fashioned sitcom is back. Or maybe it never went away. The recent Family Channel comedy “Melissa & Joey” shamelessly recycles “Who’s the Boss?” and the just-concluded first season of “Hot in Cleveland” appealed to a broad audience of viewers who enjoy the comforting familiarity of its format, not to mention its cast.

“Melissa” and “Hot” are hardly the first to practice creative recycling. Way back in 2001, the Damon Wayans and Tisha Campbell-Martin comedy “My Wife and Kids” (7 p.m., Nick-at-Nite) offered an unabashedly “Cosby”-esque alternative to the era’s predominantly “Friends”-centric fare. The show, featuring lessons, hugs, cute kids and a bumbling dad who mixes wisdom and silliness will become part of Nick’s block of family comedies, joining the similarly retro “George Lopez” that airs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

• The last Monday night in August is usually considered a better time to bury bad news than make a big announcement, but ABC defies the trend by promising to reveal the new cast of “Dancing with the Stars” during tonight’s episode of “Bachelor Pad” (7 p.m., ABC).
