English Tea Dance to benefit LAC student dancers

In an effort to help make the study of classical dance available to all students regardless of income, the Lawrence Arts Center dance department is establishing a Dance Shoe Scholarship Fund. Initial startup monies for this fund will come from the Arts Center’s first-ever English Tea Dance, which will be 2:30 p.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 29 at 940 N.H.

The event will be structured like a typical tea dance from the early 20th century and will feature live music from Jill and Gregg Allen and Christie Dobson. The dances will be led by Lucy Shopen.

“Our advanced dance students require six to eight pairs of pointe shoes in a typical year,” says Ballet Program Coordinator Deborah Bettinger. “With these specialized shoes costing between $60 and $90 per pair, it’s easy to see how shoe purchases become a financial challenge for some families.” Bettinger hopes the Dance Shoe Scholarship Fund will be able to assist 18 students ages 12-18 each year.

Tickets are $17 per couple, $10 for adults and $5 for children under 16. Tickets can be purchased at the arts center’s front desk or by calling 843-2787.
