Lyon County Fair races canceled after Shawnee teen’s death

? A deadly accident during a mud track event at the Lyon County Fair in Emporia has prompted officials to call off two other races.

KVOE reports the county commission decided Tuesday to cancel the all-terrain vehicle races set for Friday and a demolition derby set for Saturday.

Commissioner Rollie Martin says the action is a show of respect for the family of 17-year-old Hannah Deaver of the Kansas City suburb of Shawnee.

Police said Deaver was sitting in the back of a pickup Saturday watching the Lyon County Fair’s “Mud-A-Thon,” when one of the modified pickup trucks in the event went through a guard rail. The vehicle became airborne and hit a pickup in the spectator area where Deaver was sitting.

Another teen was treated at a hospital and released.
