2010 Kansas football roster filled with changes to numbers, heights, personnel

Every year, at campuses around the country, college football rosters receive makeovers because of the departure of a bunch of seniors and the arrival of incoming freshmen and transfers.

It’s safe to say, however, that few rosters in 2010 took on as much of a facelift as that of the Kansas University football program.

When including all true freshmen and transfers, this year’s KU football roster has 25 names on it that were nowhere to be found in 2009.

What’s more, six names of underclassmen who were on last year’s roster are no longer listed on the 2010 roster. One of those is senior defensive lineman Jamal Greene, who was removed from the team after an arrest in March.

Beyond Greene, offensive linemen Ian Wolfe and Carl Wilson — both juniors a season ago — and tight end Nick Plato, safety Darrian Kelly and linebacker Julian Jones are absent from this year’s roster.

KU officials said Plato, Wolfe and Wilson left the team this offseason to pursue other interests. Jones and Kelly never showed up last year.

The names are not the only thing that changed on the roster.

In all, 12 Jayhawks who were on last year’s roster will wear new numbers this season. Toss in the fact that this will be the first year in which the players’ last names will not appear on the backs of the jerseys and it’s safe to say that keeping the players straight could be a tough task when the Jayhawks open the season Sept. 4 against North Dakota State.

Four players on the post-spring, two-deep depth chart will begin 2010 with different numbers than they had on last year’s opening day roster. Junior cornerback Isiah Barfield switched from No. 29 to No. 19; sophomore offensive lineman Duane Zlatnik traded in No. 98 in favor of No. 67; and sophomore defensive tackle Darius Parish and senior defensive end Quintin Woods have swapped numbers, with Woods now wearing No. 93 and Parish now sporting No. 55.

Other Jayhawks who switched numbers include: Tom Mabry (from 66 to 53); Taylor Lee (from 20 to 24); Chase Knighton (from 15 to 47); Brandon Hawks (from 47 to 39); Jordan Fee (from 50 to 41); Reece Petty (from 13 to 3); John Millsap (from 4 to 32); and Patrick Schilling (from 88 to 80).

Schilling is one of two players who will wear No. 80 this season, the number previously worn by All-Big 12 wideout Dezmon Briscoe. Freshman Ricki Herod, of Mesquite, Texas, also will suit up as No. 80.

Three of the most popular numbers from the past few seasons will not be worn this year. Kerry Meier’s No. 10, Todd Reesing’s No. 5 and Jake Sharp’s No. 1 all are unclaimed, according to the most recent team roster released by the university.

Former safety Darrell Stuckey, however, will have a chance to see his old number in action, as incoming freshman Brandon Bourbon, a running back from Potosi, Mo., will wear No. 25.

One other note of interest after a quick glance at this year’s roster is the apparent shrinking of several Jayhawks. It’s possible that the old staff measured heights in shoes while the new staff measures them without shoes, but 14 Jayhawks who should receive major minutes in 2010 are listed an inch shorter than they were listed a season ago.

The biggest dropoff in height came from players who were listed as 6-foot-2 in 2009. Steven Johnson, Toben Opurum, Kale Pick, Angus Quigley and Bradley McDougald all are listed at 6-1 this season.

Three cornerbacks — Barfield, Chris Harris and Anthony Davis — lost the six-foot plateau altogether and now are listed at 5-11.

Wideout Johnathan Wilson and offensive lineman Sal Capra both fell from 6-3 to 6-2, defensive end Jake Laptad fell from 6-5 to 6-4, quarterback Jordan Webb dropped from 6-1 to 6-foot, place kicker Jacob Branstetter now is listed at 5-9 and receiver D.J. Beshears went from 5-9 to 5-8.

On the other side of the spectrum, safety Lubbock Smith grew an inch, moving from 5-11 to 6-foot, and senior offensive lineman Brad Thorson sprouted two inches, jumping from 6-3 to 6-5.

The Jayhawks report to campus today and will walk through their first practice of the season Wednesday afternoon.
