As part of the consent agenda, school board members agreed to not renew contracts to 44 teachers for next year, mostly because of the state budget crisis and $4.6 million in cuts.

Some teachers on the list will be brought back in reduced positions and others were working on one-year contracts this year to cover for people who left the district, administrators said. That brought the number of teachers not offered contracts because of the budget closer to 30.

For this year the district has about 950 certified staff members — mostly teachers but also counselors and librarians.
