Has Gosselin turned ‘Dancing’ into a farce?

Kate Gosselin has room for improvement on “Dancing with the Stars” (7 p.m., ABC). And that’s the understatement of the year.

Several interesting things happened on “Dancing” last week. The “Jon & Kate” star danced so poorly she provoked a tirade of negative remarks from judge Bruno Tonioli. One of the nicest words he used was “dreadful.” And at the same time, “Dancing” viewership was stronger than ever. The Tuesday show drew more viewers than “American Idol.” And that’s a big deal.

So “Dancing” has a weird Gosselin problem. Do producers want her to stick around because she obviously draws viewers? Or do they want her voted off the show because she’s a horrible performer who proves that “Dancing with the Stars” is no longer about dancing?

Given the choice between train-wreck television and integrity, TV producers (and many home viewers and voters) will always go for the train wreck. This isn’t true of only “Dancing.” And Kate Gosselin (who just got a new show on TLC) isn’t the only TV personality milking an audience’s irrational affection for big bucks.

Speaking of “Dancing with the Stars,” look for “Dancing”‘s own Tom Bergeron to guest-star as a controversial talk-radio host on tonight’s “Castle” (9 p.m., ABC).

• “Unsung” (8 p.m., TV One), the series that profiles underappreciated musical artists or groups, examines the career of Stacy Lattisaw. A teen sensation who opened for Michael Jackson, Lattisaw would record numerous albums and have several hits (including “Let Me Be Your Angel” and “Love on a Two-Way Street”) before abruptly leaving the business.
