With the availability of injured running back Jake Sharp uncertain, Kansas University coach Mark Mangino said Monday that third-string back Rell Lewis likely would see an increased role in Saturday’s game against visiting Southern Mississippi.

Speaking during the Big 12 coaches teleconference, Mangino said that Lewis would be the likely backup to true freshman Toben Opurum if Sharp is unable to play.

“We’re sitting in meetings now working on how we should proceed with (second- and third-string),” said Mangino, whose No. 20 Jayhawks are 3-0 this season. “I think two right now would be Rell Lewis, and the third guy, we’re deciding.”

In limited action this year, Lewis has rushed just five times for 17 yards, but showed flashes during last April’s spring game, when he was the game’s leading rusher.

Options for the No. 3 running back spot would appear to include junior-college transfer Daniel Porter and true freshman Deshaun Sands, current members of the scout team who haven’t recorded a carry yet this season.

KU officials announced Monday that Saturday’s game is officially a sellout.
