A Lawrence woman was charged Wednesday with shooting her ex-boyfriend in Missouri and then burning his home to the ground, prosecutors said.

Lawrence police arrested Annette Cross, also known as Annette Sanford, at 2 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant out of Howell County, Missouri, jail records show.

Prosecutors charged Cross, 30, with first-degree murder and first-degree arson in the death of her ex-boyfriend, Andrew Day. The crimes allegedly occurred Tuesday at his Mountain View, Mo., home, which is east of Springfield, Mo.

According to a probable cause statement provided by Missouri officials, investigators said the suspect admitted to driving from Lawrence with another person to Mountain View with a gun.

“She and the other person then confronted Andrew Day with the gun and he was shot four times (twice in the head and twice in the chest,)” Howell County Sheriff’s Office investigator Lt. Gary Lambe said in the probable cause statement.

Lambe said Cross thought the man was still alive and told authorities during questioning in Lawrence “that she and the other individual lit a phone book on fire after placing it near the couch and left Day bleeding in the house.”

Sheriff’s investigators said they found Day’s badly burned body in the rubble of the fire.

A judge set Cross’s bond at $1 million, Missouri court records show. No other arrests have been reported in the case.
