Basketball fundraiser to honor Frederick
KU students knew former athletic director as teacher
Kansas University graduate students are planning a 3-on-3 basketball tournament to raise funds in honor of Bob Frederick, the university’s former athletic director.
The students are in a course that was scheduled to be taught by Frederick, who died in a bicycle accident earlier this year. As part of the requirements of the course, the students have to plan an event, and something honoring Frederick seemed a natural fit, said Mike Magnusson, a student in the course and an event organizer.
Magnusson said he, like many other students in the health, sport and exercise sciences department, knew Frederick personally as a teacher and adviser.
“He was a person that had the highest moral values that you can imagine,” Magnusson said of his former instructor. “He taught me it was important not only to be a respectable person, but to be that way in everything that you did. That’s what Dr. Bob was.”
The tournament is scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 21 at Robinson Gymnasium on the KU campus. Teams may register in advance by visiting sportkc.com/livealifethatmatters.
Teams of up to five people may register for a total fee of $28 for students and $43 for members of the community. Participants must be at least 18 years old.
A silent auction is also planned for the event, with items autographed by KU basketball coach Bill Self, former KU coach Roy Williams and other sports figures. There will be other events scheduled on Nov. 21, too, including a kids fun zone and a Kansas alumni basketball game featuring former men’s and women’s players.
The students hope to raise at least $10,000 to go toward an endowed fund at KU in the name of the Frederick family.
