Kansas University defensive end D.J. Marshall has been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and informed his coaches and teammates about the diagnosis Thursday.
"I am very thankful for the support that I've received from my family, my teammates and coaches, and from our medical staff," Marshall said in a release. "Coach Mangino is always telling us to "Saw wood," especially when our back is to the wall. I am going to beat this disease with their help and my hard work. I can't wait to get back on the field."
The red-shirt freshman will undergo more tests before doctors decide on a treatment.
"The prognosis for recovery from Hodgkin lymphoma is good," KU team physician Larry Magee said in a release. "We are optimistic that D.J. will make a complete recovery. Right now the most important thing is for him to have follow-up tests and then begin treatment."
KU football coach Mark Mangino said Marshall will remain with the team this weekend.
"D.J. won't practice, but he's part of our team," Mangino said in a release. "In fact, he will travel with us this weekend to Manhattan for our game against Kansas State. As D.J. faces this disease, we know he will do so with great determination. Our thoughts and prayers will be with him daily. We look forward to his complete recovery and having him back on the field as soon as possible."

I've had three friends diagnosed with the same illness over the last 20 years. They all beat it and are thriving with no recurrences.
Just know that there's nothing but prayers and good wishes out there for you, D.J. Just remember and draw strength from this as fight this disease. Take care.
