Pearl Jam bassist mugged outside studio

Atlanta — Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament was mugged outside an Atlanta studio where the band is recording, police said.

Three masked men dressed mostly in black came out of the woods behind Southern Tracks recording studio and attacked Ament and employee Mark Anthony Smith as they arrived in a rented Jeep late last month, DeKalb County police said.

Police say the men smashed three of the Jeep’s windows and grabbed a Blackberry and two computers and demanded money. Ament jumped out of the passenger side and tried to run, but one of the men knocked him to the ground and stole his passport.

The men got away with $3,000 cash, along with computers and other equipment worth more than $4,000. Paramedics treated Ament for head injuries.

Surveillance cameras recorded the incident but no one has been arrested.

Pearl Jam management had no comment Thursday.

Redford to help train minority filmmakers

Santa Fe, N.M. — Robert Redford is collaborating with the state of New Mexico to expand training for Native American and Hispanic filmmakers.

The program, “Sundance in New Mexico,” will be based at Los Luceros, a state-owned historic home along the Rio Grande. It will be used for programs and workshops.

The actor and director, who puts on the yearly Sundance Film Festival, says the program grew out of his long-standing love for the state and his commitment to furthering opportunities for American Indian and Hispanic filmmakers.

The collaboration begins this weekend with a panel discussion featuring director John Sayles and others in Santa Fe.

Alec Baldwin going to Hanoi with Philharmonic

New York — Actor Alec Baldwin says he’ll travel to Hanoi with the New York Philharmonic when it makes its Vietnam debut in October.

The star of NBC’s Emmy-award winning comedy “30 Rock” begins a side gig this fall as the new host of the national radio broadcast “The New York Philharmonic This Week.”

The orchestra will travel to Vietnam for two concerts at the Hanoi Opera House in October.

During an appearance Tuesday on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” the actor from Long Island called the hosting job “one of the greatest things to ever happen to me.”

He joked that the New York Philharmonic knew where to find him because “all of the people who are prominent in classical music come from two locations: Vienna or Massapequa, Long Island.”

Wintour does ’60 Minutes’ interview

New York — What’s behind those shades, Anna?

Vogue Editor Anna Wintour is rarely seen without dark glasses at fashion shows. In an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes,” airing Sunday, the elusive magazine legend explains why she likes to hide her eyes.

According to Wintour, her signature shades act as “armor.” She says if she’s enjoying a runway show — or bored out of her mind — nobody will notice.

Indeed, a hush might fall over the crowd should Wintour show emotion. Since becoming Vogue editor more than 20 years ago, Wintour has forged a role as one of the most powerful players in fashion.

At 59, Wintour, who inspired the best-seller “The Devil Wears Prada,” plans to hold on to her post.

Leno’s last ‘Tonight’ guest is Conan O’Brien

Los Angeles — In a neat bit of promotion, Jay Leno’s last guest on the “Tonight” show will be the man who’s taking over for him — Conan O’Brien.

James Taylor will perform on Leno’s May 29 finale, the late-night host told a teleconference Thursday. And surprises are in store, he said.

“I have something really unusual and different planned, something really out of left field that we’re going to end on. It’s something really personal,” Leno said, and has to do with the show and its staff.

“I think it will make people smile,” he added.

Taylor was a sentimental choice: Leno said that when he left his native Boston for his comedy career, the pop star’s music was playing on the radio.

O’Brien, who turned NBC’s “Late Night” over to Jimmy Fallon in March, becomes “Tonight” host on June 1. Next fall, Leno will begin a daily 9 p.m. CDT show on NBC.

Conrad’s ‘Laguna Beach’ rival joins ‘The Hills’

New York — Lauren Conrad’s “Laguna Beach” nemesis is heading for “The Hills.”

Now that Conrad has left the hit MTV reality series, Kristin Cavallari is taking her place.

MTV publicist Emily Yeomans confirms Cavallari will replace Conrad on the show. The season-five finale on May 31 marks Cavallari’s “Hills” debut.

The 22-year-old aspiring actress caught the bouquet at the April 25 wedding of the series’ duo, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt. The event was filmed by MTV.

Cavallari became a celebrity in 2004 when MTV tracked her high school love life and rivalry with Conrad on the reality show “Laguna Beach.”
