Police investigating pair of early-morning accidents

Police are investigating two south Lawrence car accidents reported Friday morning within minutes of one another.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said the two accidents, in the 2100 block of West 26th Street and in the 1200 block of West 28th Court, were probably related.

At 12:55 a.m., police received a report of a maroon sport utility vehicle leaving the scene of an accident in the 2100 block of West 26th Street.

Around 1 a.m., police responded to the 1200 block of West 28th Court, where a maroon SUV had crashed into the side of a house. The owner of the home was checked by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical at the scene. She was alarmed, but did not suffer any injuries. The house sustained significant structural damage, Hadl said.

Hadl said police believe the driver was headed westbound on 27th Terrace, failed to negotiate a T intersection, left the roadway and then hit the house.

The owner of the vehicle, a male, was present at the scene when police arrived. As of Friday morning, Lawrence police were investigating if the owner or someone else was driving the SUV. Police were also investigating whether alcohol played a role in the accidents, Hadl said.
