KU Wind Ensemble releases new CD: ‘Wild Nights!’

The Kansas University Wind Ensemble is becoming a fairly prolific recording artist.

For the second time in three years, the Naxos label has released a CD featuring KU’s top band. This one, which was released last week, is called “Wild Nights!” and has a nocturnal theme.

“This is as good as it gets,” says Scott Weiss, KU’s director of bands. “Naxos is the world’s largest classical label. It’s available internationally and at all the major online retailers. It’s a tremendous benefit for us. It gets our name out internationally.”

The title tune is a new piece by Frank Ticheli. Other works on the CD include “Shadow Dance” by David Dzubay and “Anahita” by Roshanne Etezady. Vince Gnojek, a KU music professor, also is featured on John Mackey’s “Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Wind Ensemble.”

In addition to the international recognition, KU also is benefiting from a new scholarship program set up by Naxos. For each “Wild Nights!” CD purchased through the www.naxosdirect.com, KU receives $1 toward a music scholarship.

Weiss says he’s happy with the way the CD turned out.

“I’m really pleased with the product,” Weiss says. “It’s a great CD.”
