Kathleen Sebelius: Two decades in politics
Kathleen Sebelius is the nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services in Obama's Cabinet. She has served as Kansas' governor since 2002 and before that was insurance commissioner and a state representative.
Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who has been nominated by President Barack Obama to be secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will participate in her first Senate confirmation hearing today.
She will appear before the Senate Health Education and Labor Committee, chaired by Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass. On Thursday, she will appear before the Senate Finance Committee, chaired by Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont.
Both hearings will be televised on C-SPAN, Sunflower Broadband Channel 96, and begin at 9 a.m.
The finance panel will be the one that recommends confirmation to the full Senate, which could act before Congress adjourns for its two-week Easter recess.
