LHS marching band hopes to raise funds with uniform auction, concert

Concert, auction and sale are Wednesday

The Lawrence High School marching band will have a concert at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the cafeteria at the school, 19th and Louisiana streets.

Four drum major uniforms will be auctioned immediately after the concert. Regular band uniforms also will be on sale for $100. If you don’t want a hat, the cost is $75, and if you only want a hat, the cost is $25.

Want to own a piece of Lawrence High School history?

Members of the school’s marching band hope that prospect will attract alumni to a concert and auction on Wednesday. Band members are trying to get rid of their old uniforms while raising money for future band expenses.

Lawrence High senior Courtney Griffin said the old uniforms have some problems.

“First off, they’re 13 years old, and they’re disgusting. There are holes and plenty of stains.”

Another LHS senior, Morgan Nilhas, said it’s not just the stains that are unflattering. “They just didn’t fit anyone right.”

So why would anyone want a dirty, old band uniform? Griffin said alumni would.

“Band is a huge organization,” she said. “It’s a family. We spend multiple hours outside of school … and they grow connected to these uniforms.”

The new uniforms are red and black with stripes on the front.

“It just looks fresh, and it brings a new look to the band,” Griffin said. “It makes us look like we’re together and that we know what we’re doing.”

Nilhas said she thought the new uniforms would probably have to last another 13 years because of the price tag: $106,000.
