Douglas County prosecutors charged a 41-year-old man Monday with robbing and kidnapping a Lawrence woman in February 2008.
Donald Bartsma is accused of approaching the 24-year-old victim in the parking lot of Kohl’s, 3234 Iowa, forcing her into her car at knife point, driving her to a bank at 27th and Iowa streets and forcing her to withdraw money, according to police. The incident occurred Feb. 13, 2008.
The suspect left the bank, drove south on Iowa to County Road 458, got out of the car between Wells Overlook and U.S. Highway 59 and fled on foot, the woman told police. The victim was unharmed.
Bartsma was convicted in Missouri for a similar crime, just hours after the Lawrence incident, for trying to rob a woman in a Kansas City, Mo., shopping center parking lot, then leading police on a high-speed chase.
He received a 25-year prison sentence, according to Missouri Department of Corrections records.
He faces 41 years in prison if convicted of the Lawrence incident, Douglas County District Judge Pro Tem Jim George said during Bartsma’s first appearance Monday.
Bartsma is scheduled to return to court at 2 p.m. Monday for an appearance in front of District Judge Sally Pokorny.
