Eudora, Tonganoxie girls moving on in sub-state

Eudora — Kendal Abel scored 14 points, and Evan Folks scored five points and had five steals to help lead the Eudora girls basketball team to a first-round sub-state 51-36 win over Spring Hill Tuesday.

Next up for the Cardinals (14-7) is a second round match against Piper at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Eudora.

Tonganoxie girls 61, Hiawatha 27

Tonganoxie — It’s been said that basketball is a game of runs and Tonganoxie didn’t do anything to dispel that adage it in its sub-state opener against Hiawatha with one run after another.

THS opened with a 12-2 surge and after Hiawatha (6-15) stopped that spurt with a basket to cut the lead to eight, Tonganoxie went on a 6-0 run and led by double digits the rest of the way.

As individuals, the Chieftains also scored in spurts. Danielle Miller and Andie Jeannin scored five apiece in the first quarter.

Chrissie Jeannin contributed eight in the second, the same period that Roni Grizzle chipped in six and Haley Smith scored five. In the third quarter, Lauren Hall drained two threes for six points.

Tonganoxie went on an 8-1 run and a 9-2 run in the second quarter and had another 9-2 run in the third.

The eruptions shot the Chieftains (15-6) into a sub-state semifinal with ease thanks to a hot start that featured great ball movement and energy — two things that THS coach Randy Kraft said were the difference in the game.

“When we moved the ball well, usually it went in and usually we got really good shots,” he said.

Showing some hardwood gusto didn’t hurt either.

“The other thing was the enthusiasm they played with,” Kraft said, noting a recent lack of zest had hurt THS, and he was glad to see the opposite against Hiawatha. “The enthusiasm was out there, the effort, and they were having fun.”

The Chieftains will face rival Basehor-Linwood on Friday at Perry-Lecompton, where the winner will advance to a sub-state final.

Sumner Academy 73, De Soto girls 35

Kansas City, Kan. — The De Soto girls basketball team saw its season come to an end after losing its first sub-state game to Sumner Academy.

The Sabres were too strong and fast for the young Wildcats- — a team with only one senior, Amber Laudick.

Kelsey Fisher led the team with 10 points. Tami Crow and Shelbi Petty kicked in nine and six, respectively.

Saint James 49, Baldwin girls 46

Lenexa — A trio of Baldwin girls scored in double figures, but it wasn’t enough to win. Baldwin (9-12) fell to Saint James (13-8), 49-46, in the first round of the Class 4A sub-state tournament.

Baldwin led 8-0 early and increased its lead to 24-12 midway through the second quarter. Then Saint James went on an 18-2 run during the next eight minutes.

The final 12 minutes were a see-saw battle with Saint James controlling much of it.

Tracie Weege led Baldwin with 13 points. Ramie Burkhart and Alex Zordel added 12 and 10 points.
