Journal-World featured in book of front pages documenting Obama’s election

The Lawrence Journal-World is one of dozens of newspapers featured in the new book, “Obama: The Historic Front Pages” (Sterling Publishing).

The book features newspaper front pages from Nov. 5 — the day after the presidential election — from around the world, as well as copies of several of Obama’s speeches. It was compiled by David Elliot Cohen, best known for his “America 24/7” books, and Mark Greenberg, a photographer whose work has appeared in publications including Life and National Geographic.

“A day after the election, I knew there had to be a book that celebrated these historic front pages and gave readers a sense of global perspective about the event,” Greenberg says.

They chose papers that represented all 50 states, both friendly and not-so-friendly international nations and most major urban newspapers. The most common themes, Cohen says, were “hope over fear” and “change has come,” with many stories referencing Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech on the front page.

Cohen says this about the Journal-World’s inclusion: “The Journal-World’s editors took a national/local approach. They chose a great AP photo of the triumphant Obama and paired that with a great photo of local Obama fans shot at Abe and Jake’s Landing by Thad Allender. The page looks balanced because the subjects of both pictures have upraised arms.”

The book is available for $19.95 at LJWorldstore.com.
