Re-Ignited: The Gaslight Tavern re-opens for business, bourbon, and bluegrass

The Gaslight Tavern will re-open its doors on July 3 on the heels of an eight-month absence. It will retain its character as an off-the-beaten-path destination for folksy live music and intimate conversations, hosting shows on the outdoor patio and offering up libations to loosen the air. New bar manager Outlaw Jake took a break from his busy renovating schedule to discuss the new and improved Gaslight. CAUTION: Some salty language is used during this podcast.

Last November, The Gaslight Tavern in north Lawrence hosted its last show ever with Split Lip Rayfield playing the tiny bar off into the great abyss of history.

NOT!

The Gaslight will re-open its doors on July 3, when it will presumably be overrun by the townies, hippies, cavaliers, and other hangers-out who have spent the last eight months missing one of town's preferred joints. It will retain its character as an off-the-beaten-path destination for folksy live music and intimate conversations, hosting shows on the outdoor patio and offering up $2.50 domestic bottles to loosen the air.

New bar manager Outlaw Jake took a break from his busy renovating schedule to discuss the new and improved Gaslight. Topics covered include: early shows for old farts, bourbon selections, the upcoming Fourth of July extravaganza, and why your dead body might mysteriously wash up on the banks of the Kaw River if you forget to pay your bar tabs.

So at first I thought this was just a blog entry with the normal loose editorial standards, but then saw that it appeared to be an actual news story and felt bad for the writer.

Glad to have this place open again though!

Those of us in N. Lawrence aren't overly happy though. The place is too small to really have bands or even more than a few people in it. And they are so loud that those of us blocks away can hear it clearly. I feel sorry for people with young kids that go to bed while these bands play (usually for tiny little crowds). We were happy to see it close and not happy to see it reopening.

A successful music bar would have enough room for the musicians and the patrons.

I personally am thrilled to see that the Gaslight is re-opening, but I don't live in NoLaw so I don't know about the sound issue. I've only seen/heard acoustic music played there (which wasn't very loud) so I don't know how loud it might get with other bands.
Yes, it is small, but not too small. Besides, that's part of it's charm. I've never seen more than a dozen people at the bar inside, but I have seen 50-75 people enjoying a band play on the patio on many occasions. And on a cool summer Lawrence night with a slight breeze blowing, that's an awesome spot to be!
