University Theatre at Kansas University kicks off its summer series with “Spitfire Grill,” a musical based on the 1996 film by Lee David Zlotoff. The musical, by James Valcq and Fred Alley, is based in a small Wisconsin town. Percy Talbot (Cassie Hollman) has just been released from prison and gets a job at the Spitfire Grill. When owner Hannah (Jeanne Averill) is injured and can’t continue the restaurant’s operation, Percy holds a raffle to win it. “The music for ‘Spitfire’ almost defies classification and has its roots in the American and Celtic folk traditions,” says director John Staniunas. “There are really no conventional show tunes in the score, but rather a number of beautiful songs and ballads mixed in with beautifully interwoven ensemble pieces.” The show opens at 7:30 p.m. today at the Stage Too! in Murphy Hall. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Wednesday through July 3, and at 5 p.m. Sunday.
