Man convicted of armed robbery in Lawrence wants to withdraw guilty plea

A Gardner man convicted of robbing two people at gunpoint in Lawrence wants to withdraw his guilty plea.

But the attorney for 23-year-old Terrell D. Griffin recommended during a court hearing on Thursday that the defendant not seek a trial because he could face more prison time.

Griffin pleaded guilty in April to aggravated robbery, attempted aggravated robbery, criminal discharge of a firearm and criminal possession of a firearm, all felonies.

In April, he admitted he and another man, Christopher Lee Forbush-Willis, of Olathe, robbed two people at gunpoint about 1 a.m. Jan. 10 in the 1600 block of West Ninth Street. According to Griffin’s plea, he later fired shots at a car heading east on Kansas Highway 10 near Eudora. No one was hurt, but several bullets struck a vehicle.

Prosecutors also accused a third suspect, Lindsey Leigh Abram, 23, also of Gardner, of aiding the two men in the case. A trial for Forbush-Willis is set to begin Nov. 2. Abram has pleaded to a conspiracy charge.

Defense attorney Craig Stancliffe said he was still reviewing evidence in the case with Griffin. Even though Griffin faces more than 11 years in prison, Stancliffe said if the plea is withdrawn, prosecutors could possibly refile the robbery and shooting cases separately, and a legal quirk could mean he’d face up to 60 years in prison because two convictions would significantly boost his criminal history.

District Judge Michael Malone has scheduled Griffin’s next hearing for July 16.
