Tonys disappoint nominees with local ties

Two people with ties to Lawrence missed out on Tony Awards during the annual presentation ceremony Sunday night. Karole Armitage, who grew up in Lawrence, was nominated for best choreography for “Hair,” but the award went to Peter Darling for “Billy Elliot, the Musical.” “Hair,” however, did win for best revival of a musical. Meanwhile, Neil LaBute, a Kansas University alumnus, lost for best play to Yasmina Reza, who wrote “God of Carnage.” LaBute was nominated for his play “Reasons to be Pretty.”
