A man escaped injury Monday afternoon after jumping from the southbound span of the Kansas River bridge.

Around 5:15 p.m. Monday, emergency response crews received numerous calls about a person hanging off the southbound span of the Kansas River bridge.

Chief Mark Bradford said by the time Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews arrived — the man was already out of the water.

The man did not appear to be injured — and did not require any medical treatment at the scene.

Traffic was slowed on both spans of the bridge over the river, as rescuers worked to ensure the man made it to safety.
