Firefighters’ funds receive distribution

July 14, 2009

A tax paid by insurance companies will provide about $271,000 to assist Lawrence firefighters this year, Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger’s office announced Monday.

Generated from a 2 percent tax that insurance companies paid on 2008 fire and lightning insurance premiums written in Kansas, much of the money is distributed to local firefighter relief organizations to purchase accident, health, disability and life insurance premiums for firefighters and their families.

The Kansas Insurance Department collected more than $9.2 million from insurance companies, which will be distributed to 582 Firefighter Relief Associations in Kansas. The 10 firefighter relief organizations in Douglas County will receive about $330,000, including $270,925 for Lawrence firefighters.
