Why do people put their kids on those stupid things?! There have been so many injuries and fatalities. This one is unusual only in that the error was pulling out into the street into the path of a vehicle. Usually they take too-steep inclines and roll the things on themselves.
Like their aquatic and winter counterparts, they are a waste of fuel, they pollute and play havoc with the habitats of wild critters, they're noisy and irritating to the neighbors (or, in the case of “personal watercraft,” other boaters), and they result in many utterly needless injuries and deaths.
Give the kid a tennis racket, a set of golf clubs, or something he can enjoy while getting some exercise and not tearing up the land.
Hope this guy survives and learns to put personal safety over mindless thrills.

This was a true accident. Neither could see the other until the last minute. I know it is not my place to tell someone else what to do for amusement.

ATV=not road legal, so it had no business pulling out on the highway.

No, Pywacket, golf courses don't tear up the land.
Or pollute.

this ATV kid had no business pulling out onto the *road,* the visibility near the hilltop is irrelevant.
also, it certainly is your business what others do for amusement, plus it is our business what you do for amusement Irish.
ever heard of driving/traffic laws? zoning? this kid was 13, thank God he was wearing a helmet, our society makes it our business that people on motorcycles, ATV's wear helmets…why do you suppose that is?

Py,
some people shouldn't have kids! I agree with you, why in he|| put a kid on one of those?!?
but, as to the cheap thrills, well we don't wanna ban all the cheap thrills: remember it is *illegal* for kids to loaf in Lawrence after 11pm!
