Editor’s note: Today’s letters to the editor are from Southwest Junior High students learning about persuasive writing.

To the editor:

The South Lawrence Trafficway is what I think would help the Baker Wetlands grow. Even though the trafficway is going to be built through the wetlands the construction will actually allow 308 more acres of man-made Wetlands added to the Baker Wetlands, according to some people quoted in the Lawrence Journal-World.

The thought of the South Lawrence Trafficway has caused many people to go against the SLT for fear of pollution in the wetlands. One of the plans for construction is to build a 10-foot high wall around the wetlands to prevent any pollution from reaching the Baker Wetlands.

Also many people think of the high taxes if the SLT is built, but the national government is going to pay for the construction. However, if Lawrence decides to build it elsewhere, then the government will not fund the project. This move will result in no change to the current size of the Wetlands and high taxation.

I feel that the SLT will also give us some outdoor recreation such as bike trails, hiking trails, new pedestrian access at the Northeast and Northwest corners of the Wetlands, campsites and parking areas.
