Editor’s note: Today’s letters to the editor are from Southwest Junior High students learning about persuasive writing.

To the editor:

The South Lawrence Trafficway will be a road connecting the Kansas Turnpike and K-10. I believe it is an excellent idea that will help almost all of the people of Lawrence. It will reduce accidents and the amount of animals killed from road traffic. It will also greatly decrease the amount of traffic on 23rd Street.

The problem, however, is that the SLT would have to be extended through the Baker Wetlands. This project would destroy 70 acres of the Baker Wetlands, but the people building the SLT are going to expand the wetlands 300 more acres.

It will reduce accidents by not having Lawrence streets packed with traffic, which will then lower the amount of injuries. Also the amount of road kill will decrease because tall walls will be built on the sides of 32nd Street.

Also, all of the people trying to get from the Kansas turnpike to K-10 won’t have to go through Lawrence; they will instead take the 32nd Street route. This will greatly decrease the amount of traffic on 23rd Street. This solution is by far the most logical way to go.
