Letter to the editor: Too addicted to our cars

To the editor:

If Lawrence were to build a more thorough cycling infrastructure, would more residents use bikes for basic transportation? While I heartily endorse multimodal transportation advocate Bill Steele’s recommendation that Kentucky and Tennessee Streets be reduced to one-lane car traffic to accommodate protected bike lanes, I remain skeptical that such a plan could ever be implemented (June 26 Journal-World, “Advocates’ proposal would make Tennessee and Kentucky streets friendlier for bikes and reduce lanes for cars”).

Our addiction to the automobile is complete and total. Transforming these major thoroughfares to safely allow for bikes won’t be tolerated by the majority. That’s the sad and ugly truth.
