Renewable power in Kansas

January 20, 2009

Editor's note: Today's letters to the editor are from Southwest Junior High students learning about persuasive writing.

To the editor:

Ever since I have learned about the recent increase of carbon dioxide in our Earth’s atmosphere I have wanted to do something to try to either stop it or decrease it. I think I have found a way to decrease the addition of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. My theory is the changing of plain old car engines with new hybrid engines that run on mostly electricity. According to Kansas wind power, not only does it stop air pollution by more than 20 percent but it also saves you money on gas.

Another way to stop air pollution is to either car pool or ride the bus because it uses less gas and emits less exhaust. Wind turbines are yet another way to get energy without making any carbon dioxide or any other air pollutants. You may not know how much CO2 you’re releasing each day, but it adds up. Try your best to help bring the amount of CO2 down by taking my advice and help improve the environment.

Alex,Do you know that there is a CO2 increase or is it because someone told you there was?Do you know that CO2 is bad, or is it because someone told you it was?Do you know that humans have increased it to some level which is bad, or is it because someone told you they did?Do you know that many are saying that these things are not true?Should you believe everything you are told? More importantly, should you act on something if you don't really know if it's true or not? Especially if there are others saying the opposite. How do you decide which to believe?Do you see a difference between seeking alternative power because the Earth's oil and coal are being used up, it's supporting terrorism, it's polluting the environment with seeking alternative power because of CO2 (which is not pollution and is necessary for life)? Do you see that the ends does not justify the means? That using dishonest support for even a good reason is ....well dishonest, and will cause losing of your credibility?
