Editor's note: Today's letters to the editor are from Southwest Junior High students learning about persuasive writing.

To the editor:

Have you ever wondered how the animals you eat were treated before they were killed? Current laws in the U.S. state that animals must be stunned before they are killed for meat. However, many companies that distribute our animal meats are not stunning their animals properly. Even after many incidents were reported, the law is doing little to stop or even prevent this.

This is extremely shocking, and the shock doubles when some officials said, “We know it’s happening, but there is nothing we can do about it.” We can and must do something about this cruelty. People don’t treat animals like they would treat people. Animals have brains too, but humans have the ability to communicate with words and organize effectively. That is why it is our job to protect the animals that don’t have developed brains as ours. The most important thing, of course, is to make sure that people are stunning animals properly. When we stun animals properly, we ensure that these animals suffer no pain and die a painless death. This is and always will be the right thing to do.

Ahhhh. Another homework assignment."This is extremely shocking, "What, you mean the "stunning" part?"People don’t treat animals like they would treat people."Oh, I don't know. Have you heard of police using stun guns?"The most important thing, of course, is to make sure that people are stunning animals properly."Yep, proper stunning, that's the thing!"When we stun animals properly, we ensure that these animals suffer no pain and die a painless death. This is and always will be the right thing to do."How nice.Instead of stunning them, how about just killing them? Why are they being killed, anyway? Why are you even discussing the best means of slaughter?I don't believe animals are people, but since you maintaining a responsibility of treating animals like people, let me ask you this:Do people eat people? Wouldn't they be TASTY?

I don't care how they're killed as long as they taste good.Nature has no morals, and any other animal that preys on cows doesn't care about killing them humanely, so why should we?GET IN MY BELLY

My father grew up on a farm where they butchered a lot of their own livestock. Their family had a really good idea. They would pair a cow, fowl, or pig with another cow, fowl, or pig of a similar size and weight. Then they would put them in a corral-like pen, throw one large knife in with them and then tell them that only one of them can come out. They choose. It's really the only humane way to handle the whole situation. Good letter. ;)
