Pay college athletes

Editor’s note: Today’s letters to the editor are from Southwest Junior High students learning about persuasive writing.

To the editor:

College athletes should get paid for what they do, but they unfortunately don’t.

I am not saying they should get as much as the coaches because that would be unnecessary, but they do deserve to get paid a wage for the work they do.

I know that some people may say, “it’s a privilege for them to play for their school.” But it’s not fair how much universities make from their students’ work. They deserve to get paid just like you deserve to get paid. Really what is the difference between you and them? You work hard and they work hard. You make money for your company and they make money for their school. You would be expected to drop whatever you are doing to go to work and so would they. They do all that while being expected to travel to many different states, get enough sleep, and most importantly keep their grades up.

For the amount of time that they put into practices and games it wouldn’t be right to not pay them what they work hard for.

College athletes really don’t get the credit they deserve for the work they do for free.
