Are we the last city in Kansas with junior highs?

Editor’s note: Today’s letters to the editor are from Southwest Junior High students learning about persuasive writing.

To the editor:

I am supporting the fact that junior high should change to middle schools. I think this because in elementary school there is K-6, and I think that the elementary schools shouldn’t have that many grades.

The age difference in elementary schools should not be a big age difference between grade levels. Students that are sixth graders need to be with older kids in an older environment. My opinion is upcoming seventh graders shouldn’t switch when they are thirteen years old. They should have plenty experience with lockers, and the bigger school that they need to adapt to.

My transition from elementary school to junior high was a big step but it was everything I thought it would be. I liked how I got to explore the school and meet more people. Now I have a lot of friends and I know where everything in the school is. The one thing I didn’t like was getting up to early, to get on the bus or to get a ride to school by 8:08.

The process of junior high is hard to adjust to, but after a while you get the hang of it. I thought that junior high was going to be harder than it really was. But I got a feel for the new school along with everyone else quickly, and when it’s your child’s turn they will too. So just relax and take a deep breath onto junior high.
