Three men were arrested Sunday morning after allegedly holding another man against his will at a residence on the 1300 block of Pennsylvania Street.

Lawrence police Sgt. Damon Thomas said police interviewed a 19-year-old Lawrence man about 6 a.m. at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. The man said the three suspects battered him and held him for three hours before releasing him.

The victim said the suspects, who were victims of an earlier robbery, believed him to be the perpetrator. The suspects were known to the victim.

The suspects, a 20-year-old Parsons man, a 19-year-old Lawrence man and a 20-year-old Lawrence man, were arrested at 3:10 p.m. Sunday and booked on charges on aggravated assault, aggravated battery, aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping.

Thomas said detectives are continuing to investigate the crime.

Why did they think it was him? Why didn't they believe him? If he was beaten badly enough to be at the hospital it sounds like a serious matter to me. Is the robbery that started all this going to be investigated? Will they all end up in the same cell?Interesting, eh?

Good thing there is no gang mentality here.

  3. OldEnuf2BYurDad (anonymous) says…

There is no way this isn't about drugs.

  4. jengaman (anonymous) says…

Since one of the kids is from Parsons I will guess that this is drug/alcohol related. Not much else to do in a small town...Drink. Do drugs. Make babies.

  5. Boeing (anonymous) says…

Yeah sounds like a drug deal gone bad to me...

  6. Irish (Leslie Swearingen) says…

I did not think of drugs at all. It sounded to me like the beaters-up thought the beaten up had robbed them earlier, but it was a case of mistaken identity. If it was drugs why did someone call the police? Because of the hospital?

  7. cthulhu_4_president (anonymous) says…

"It sounded to me like the beaters-up thought the beaten up had robbed them earlier"Robbed of what? Of something that they felt like they couldn't call the police and report, obviously. And why didn't they call and report it? For the same reason a prostitute can't call the police after being raped: they'd go to jail.

jengaman: are you saying young people in lawrence drink less/do less drugs than people in parsons or other small towns? davis14: i have no idea what you just said. i hope you're not from parsons, because maybe i am, and i somehow know how to spell despite the fact that i avoid capitalizing words at all cost.

There were no drugs involved, although the 'victim' was a known heroin addict. The 3 guys were robbed the night prior, and suspected it to be the person who they were holding. Apparently, the 'victim' received a text message asking if he would sell some of the electronics items that were stolen. One the 3 guys found this out, they held him to get him to confess. The police didn't know about the theft until they came to arrest the guys who holding him though. They were robbed of two computers, a 52" TV, a wii, and a bunch of other electronics.Whoever broke into the house was a good friend of theirs, and intentionally did not steal items that they knew were broken. Between knowing what items were broken and the text message, they had a good idea of who did it.If they really did everything I have heard about, they took it waaaaay to far.

Slight overreaction by you davis. I'm from Parsons and "kno" a lot of recent high school grads and about the community in general. If you're from there you know exactly what I'm talking about and would agree with my statement. If not, then don't make assumptions based on the couple people you do know. Oh, and good job them by the way. So because they ran into a burning building and saved a guy that means they don't do drugs on a regular basis? ps...stoner guy can still be hero guy. Maybe I'm missing your point. As mentioned above by others - if you get robbed of legitimate (legal) property you call the cops. If your property is stolen and it's illegal you can a) hold someone hostage and beat them around for a while b) forget about it or c) call the cops to state that your pound of marijuana was just stolen (classic FAIL). I vote for C. I love reading about that kind off stuff online!I'm with you multi...nice post geniusman. Classic!!!

  17. jengaman (anonymous) says…

querulous - I wasn't trying to say that necessarily There's just more stuff to do in a city like Lawrence that could (theoretically) keep kids busy. But the bigger city would/could give them better access to harder drugs. Take your pick I guess. Honestly I have no desire to let my kids grow up in Parsons even though it's my hometown. As for the Parsons comment and spelling...maybe it's the drugs man?!?!?

  18. OldEnuf2BYurDad (anonymous) says…

Probably it's best said that SE Kansas is the drug producing center of Kansas and that Lawrence is the drug consuming leader in Kansas.Wichita would be the "get shot over drugs" capitol and Topeka the "we can't afford any drugs, so let's go to Lawrence" city.

  19. Irish (Leslie Swearingen) says…

snap, do you mean dressing him in strange clothes and making him sing funny? Ah, ha, his neighbor couldn't stand the ukulele and popped him one. That's the read reason he was in the hospital.

  20. querulousperson (anonymous) says…

well put, jenga. parsons is and has always been kind of a welfare community. there are a lot of good people, however, who have stayed and tried to make it a better place. as for the drugs: the markets in lawrence and SE KS are a bit different. i know people who grew up clean in SEK and turned competely hippy in lawrence. but that happens. . .

  21. querulousperson (anonymous) says…

    completely, whoops.

  25. bearded_gnome (anonymous) says…

Geniusman, that was classic!***okay, headline should read: "violence perpetrated in east lawrence, no topekan, no zebra print coat involved, thus far." actually this starts to sound like vigilantism. with diminishing faith in the judicial system, will we see more of this, people taking such issues into their own hands, instead of calling PD? so, was this across the alley from 1311 Delaware? just wondering. I hope things will settle down in that wonderful neighborhood now.

  26. bearded_gnome (anonymous) says…

3 arrested for holding man against will---okay, but who's Will? Will who? ***good thing I didn't grow up in parsons and automatically become a doper. nope, grew up in more rural setting; amazing, I didn't become a doper. must've been miraculous divine intervention!

Doesn't LJWorld have a policy about harassing comments? This message is for every snob biggot who has posted a comment about this article. I personally know the individuals and details about what has happened. no drugs involved! i know that's a hard concept to grasp around here considering that Lawrence had to pass special laws cause none of your kids can get financial aid because they're all pot heads. It angers me so much to think my three friends are sitting in jail because one of Lawrence's finest back stabbed them while they were trying play their first gig in a couple of years. Take a look at your own town. This crap doesn't happen in Parsons.

  28. Jayhawk_N_Denver (anonymous) says…

parsonskid, I'm not sure I understand...so, as long as no drugs are involved, you have every right to exact your own vigilante justice on a suspected thief? I know not too many people have faith in the justice system, but they couldn't take the information that they have to the police? I'm sorry your friends have gotten themselves into a bit of a pickle, but they aren't really that innocent, drugs or no. And, please, enlighten me, what law did Lawrence pass re: Financial Aid and drugs? I happen to work in the field and would be interested to know if a town is trying to circumvent a law created by the US Dept. of Education.

geniusmannumber1-What an original and hilarious post about Davis14's response! Not only did you correct someone's input on a scholarly message board, but you also managed to drop the funniest, and most original, reference to Hooked on Phonics in history. Those of you who thought that was so hilarious must be incredibly boring...So anyway, I am a Parsons High School graduate as well as a KU graduate, and I am quite proud of my hometown. The idea that Parsons is any more of a liability than any other place in Kansas is a laughable statement at best. If that logic holds true, just think what people in places like Chicago and New York must think of our sad, boring little Lawrence.

  30. hsiwlaln (anonymous) says…

I'm not going to harrass anyone, I'm just going to make a statement. There were no drugs involved in the actions of these three boys, except for the fact that the "victim" who stole from them is a junkie.I'm also a Parsons native and high school graduate and I have known them all for years and this is not "normal" behavior. These are good guys, incredible even. They would do anything for anyone...even save a stranger from a burning building. These are three of the most loving people I have ever met, and I can guarantee that none of them are a threat to society. None of them have any priors, not even a speeding ticket. They're beautiful people who don't deserve what they could potentially go through. That being said, what they did was stupid and wrong. Nothing can excuse their behavior. They obviously weren't thinking about the magnitude of their actions. They didn't realize that the people they love would have to watch them go through what they're going through and the incredible depression that it would cause them, as well as their loved ones.As angry as we may be as their loved ones, though, these are still our boys. We have to stay strong and be there for them through this terrible time. It's just incredibly frustrating to watch people judge and make assumptions when they haven't the slightest idea what's going on.

  31. jengaman (anonymous) says…

Haha! I don't know Jesse...how are the drugs in Chicago? People...it's ok to rip on Parsons a little bit even if you're from there. No biggie! I'm going to assume that anyone on this thread from Parsons is no longer living there and probably doesn't plan on doing so anytime soon. What are the chances of getting a follow-up to this story? Minimal I suppose.

  32. hsiwlaln (anonymous) says…

To Jayhawk_N_Denver: There was indeed a bill passed in Lawrence to make having a small amount of marijuana more like getting a traffic ticket so that it wouldn't effect financial aid. Apparently, that was becoming a problem.

  33. hav2say (anonymous) says…

beobachter that doesn't even make sense...and it's spelled Y-O-U...not yoo. Where are YOO from?

  34. trinity (anonymous) says…

hah! you beat me to it, rusty!i have to wonder what would've happened if they'd have held him against george, or frank, or ed...

  35. asleepinthechapel (anonymous) says…

How amusing! Not the robbery or the kidnapping or beating part, but everything else is pretty dang funny.

  36. hsiwlaln (anonymous) says…

Calling them scumbags is inexcusable when you don't know what's going on! If you are only reading this article, then you don't know what's going on. No one was kidnapped. These three "scumbags" were wronged and they're getting a bad rap because of LIES.

  37. hsiwlaln (anonymous) says…

To all who have left negative comments: These are three young men who are hard-working, talented, and caring and have their whole lives ahead of them. There are numerous people writing continuous letters, paying a great deal of money for phone calls, and making continuous trips out to the jail torturous visits through a glass window to the loves of their lives, best friends, room mates, sons, and brothers. Why? Because these are good people and they are LOVED. Every time I come to this posting and find negative comments, it breaks my heart. What has happened is completely and totally UNFAIR and they have been the victims of lies and betrayal. Please remember that these guys are people, too before you make another insensitive comment. Thank you.
