Lawrence police arrest man on suspicion of animal cruelty, sodomy

A 20-year-old man is in jail tonight, accused of sodomy and animal cruelty.

A 20-year-old man was arrested by Lawrence police Wednesday on suspicion of animal cruelty and criminal sodomy of an animal.

Police announced the arrest Thursday, and the suspect was being held in Douglas County Jail. Charges are pending.

The same man also has a pending case of animal cruelty in Douglas County District Court stemming from an alleged incident in August.

Officers were dispatched about 10 a.m. Wednesday to investigate suspicious activity in the 2100 block of Heatherwood Drive. A property manager reported that maintenance crews found a substance thought to be blood inside a residence, according to a police news release.

Police obtained a search warrant for the residence. Shortly before 3 p.m. the suspect returned to the residence and was questioned by police before being taken to jail. An investigation is continuing.

Prosecutors are waiting on additional information from police, but charges are expected to be filed today, Chief Assistant District Attorney Dave Melton said.

Police and prosecutors wouldn’t release any more information Thursday.

This is not the first, second or third animal he's been caught treating terribly. He'd better get deported for this.

I'm confused by the booking recap. The statute it cites is K.S.A. 21-3505 a2, which appears to involve children, not animals. Can anyone clarify?Anyway, the guy has his own webpage that I was brave enough to click on but didn't see anything untoward. Another search turned up pics of him at a petting zoo and with Minnie Mouse. Which in light of things is kinda icky.

Unless they (LJW) have it wrong, it was "criminal sodomy of an animal". He should be charged with a1. a2 is a felony where a1 is a misdemeanor. I wonder if they are trying to charge him with felony sodomy. Not sure what's up with this.

This was not about sex. It was about torture and death. I happen to know the details of the case first hand and this is absolutely, without question, not something to joke about. If this man hadn't been called out by observant people, he would still be torturing animals right now. And frankly, people are next. He is most definitely a serial killer/rapist in the making. I am glad this story is in the news, because unfortunately the laws surrounding animal cruelty are not nearly harsh enough in my opinion. Attention should be paid to making sure he does not get released back into society; ours, or the one he is from. Do not put animals up for adoption on Craig's list etc...because it is a haven for sick people like this guy. If you care about animals and care about keeping our city safe, you will make your voice heard about this case. Don't let them deport him or let the DA's office let him off lightly. He should pay for the things he has done.

Bluie,you're right, they've got a dozen or more rescue dogs there and could use the help. sorry but I can't help be serious: in my life, I've worked with three dogs, the dog I have I've trained and he makes number four. dogs are innocents and they just want to belong. to abuse this way, makes my blood turn cold. this guy yes could easily have graduated to people. those are the stats. to think people didn't want their critters and gave them to him. this guy needs the absolute maximum our system can hit him with and the judge needs to *mandate* psychological intervention. ***sure don't understand Maxy1's wacko point unless he's trying to say that KU's diversity is to blame for this guy being here? Sadly, I also know more about the details of this case than what has been released to the media so far. I do hope that the Journal World shares as much as possible when this guy is charged. Hopefully, when you know more you will be even more outraged. Hopefully, you will all be compelled to contact the district attorney so they don't let this slide or try to just let him slip out of the country so he's simply no longer a danger in our backyard. I also hope you will all be compelled to make yourselves familiar with the limits to the animal cruelty laws in our state. Many good people worked harder than they should have needed to in order to pass the current law. Now it is time to push for ammendments to strengthen the law. This guy is a serial killer in the making and it is very likely he will get a slap on the wrist for these multiple horrific acts. Oh, and for the record, for the love of God tell everyone you know that these animals were obtained on Craig's List. Not a smart way to find a home for a defenseless animal.

This is a very sick individual. Many serial killers have a history of abusing and killing animals, and it's not a stretch to imagine this guy moving in that direction. This young man needs a lot of very intense psychological therapy while, and after, he's incarcerated.On a sad note, I visited his web page where he has pictures of his mother and father, and other members of his family. Although I have no idea of his relationship with his parents I suspect that they are loving and will be devestated with this turn of events.

We've created a world where dogs are forced to be dependent on our care to survive. They lovingly accept that, trust us, defend us, and then some people betray them like this? Please, people, stop listing your pets on Craigslist. Just take them to the shelter, if you don't want them, so they can be safe and cared for until they can be adopted. You can't screen people like the shelter can, and you don't know how much people lie in order to obtain a defenseless animal to abuse. Please do not offer your pet up for free. Most abusers are looking for free pets to do God knows what to. How do we go about getting the laws passed? If someone will tell me what to do, I will do it. Do we make phone calls? Do we write letters? Can someone tell me what I need to do?

Hey AjiDeGallina. I wish you were right. Unfortunately animal cruelty is not taken as seriously as it should be in this world. This guy will have every chance to continue with animals and graduate to humans if he so chooses. I guarantee it. The Humane Society of the United States web site (hsus.org) has great information about animal cruelty laws state by state. Thankfully it is now a felony in Kansas, but the penalties allowed don't come close to fitting the brutal nature of the crime.

I do apologize for eluding to more details without actually providing more information. Frankly, I have never felt compelled to blog before now, but when I saw people making jokes I couldn't help myself. I certainly don't intend to tell other people what to think. I just want to believe that if the first story to break on this site had included more of the details rather than sounding like some bad barnyard joke then people might have been more sensitive. I hope that more information will come out after he is formally charged. If that doesn't happen then I assure you I will be one of many people looking to share the whole story.

I do think the LJW is assinine for not printing the name, since every other news outlet does. This guy is a repeat offender and has nor regard for life. kmat.......me pushing the issue is not going to get anywhere, I am one person. Its way bigger then me calling the DA's office. The details must come out, as bad as they may be. The only way this guy gets what he deserves is if there is public outrage.

I agree with those who feel it was only a matter of time before this sick, worthless piece of trash took the next step of a typical serial killer by moving from animals to humans.And for you forgiving types who hope that in a civil society a guy such as this creep deserves a chance to be rehabilitated and sent back and join the rest of us...um, no.
