KU football adds Richmond’s Shealy

December 31, 2009

Richmond defensive coordinator Vic Shealy will join Kansas University football coach Turner Gill's staff as a defensive position coach, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Shealy, whose official title is not yet known, joins offensive coordinator Chuck Long, defensive coordinator Carl Torbush, special teams coordinator/tight-ends coach Aaron Stamn, Reggie Mitchell (expected to serve as running backs coach), Darrell Wyatt (wide receivers) and J.B. Grimes (offensive line) as the known members of Kansas' new regime.

During a nearly 24-year coaching career, Shealy has coached at six schools, including Baylor, Austin Peay and Air Force, where he served alongside former Kansas offensive coordinator Ed Warinner. As head coach at Azusa Pacific he led the school to its first-ever NAIA national championship in 1998 and was named NAIA national coach of the year.

Prior to his one year stint at Richmond, during which the Spiders went 11-2, Shealy spent four years as an assistant at UNLV, where he served, at various times, as the assistant head coach, secondary coach, defensive coordinator and pass defensive coordinator.

Gill is expected to officially announce his staff early next week.
