Offices, services to close for New Year’s
Most government offices and public services in Lawrence and Douglas County will be closed Friday in observance of New Year’s Day.
All city and state offices will be closed Friday, as will offices in area towns.
Douglas County and district court offices will be closed, as will federal offices in the General Services Administration and federal courts.
Banks will be closed Friday.
Lawrence Transit System and T-Lift buses will not run Friday.
Parking at meters in downtown Lawrence will be free Friday.
The holiday will not affect residential solid waste collection in Lawrence. Commercial waste collection routes scheduled for Friday will be collected on either Thursday or Saturday.

South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Mass., will be closed Friday and reopen Jan. 4. East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.; Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St.; and Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., all will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and closed Friday. All centers will be open regular hours Saturday.
Lawrence Parks and Recreation’s New Year’s Overnighter will be from 8 p.m. Thursday to 8 a.m. Friday at Holcom Park Recreation Center. To register, call special events supervisor Duane Peterson, 832-7940.
The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be open Thursday for lap swimming from 5:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., and the zero depth children’s area from 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. The water slide and diving area will be open from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The center will be closed Friday.
Carl Knox Natatorium, 1901 La., is closed until Jan. 4.
Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will be open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and closed Friday. Eagle Bend Golf Course will be open Friday, weather permitting.
Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt., will be closed Thursday and Friday.
U.S. Postal Service will not make regular mail delivery Friday, and post offices will be closed.
On Thursday, UPS will only deliver and pick up air and international packages. Regular UPS packages will not be delivered Friday. FedEx will make regular deliveries on Thursday but not Friday.
All activities at Lawrence Senior Center, 745 Vt., including clubs, classes and the noon meal, will be canceled Friday. Home delivery and Bus 62 senior service meals are canceled Friday. The senior center closes at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Meals also will not be served at Babcock Place, Edgewood Place, and the Lecompton, Eudora and Baldwin City senior centers. Lawrence Meals on Wheels will not deliver Friday.
