Junior high program gets rewards boost

Students at Central Junior High School soon will get a few extra treats for investing in their health, thanks to a grant from Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Central recently received a $1,000 Blue Cross/Blue Shield Healthy Habits for Life grant. The grant will pay for T-shirts and other rewards for students completing the school’s Smart Strength program.

“The T-shirts are nice because the students get something out of it, and we get a walking advertisement,” said Laura Leonard, program manager for EDGE After School at CJHS.

The Smart Strength after-school program aims to reduce cardiovascular risk factors in youths through regular exercise, and provides students with professional trainers and nutrition education twice a week.
