Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins announced in a statement Sunday that former University of Buffalo coach Turner Gill will be the next head football coach at Kansas University.

A formal press conference will take place at 11 a.m. Monday.

“Turner Gill is a winner,” Perkins said in the release. “His accomplishments at Buffalo speak for themselves. But more than that, everyone I talked to about him, starting with (former Nebraska coach) Tom Osborne, had the highest praise for Turner as a coach and as a person.”

Gill has been coach at Buffalo the last four seasons, earning MAC coach of the year honors in 2007 and 2008.

I think he'll be alright after watching that Outside the Lines piece on him.

Congratulations to Lew Perkins for making another smart move.

I have friends in Buffalo that love this guy. I am sorry for their loss, but this is almost a home coming for Coach Gill.

Go Jayhawks!

Welcome to Lawrence, Turner even though you got the job that I feel deserved-- and earned, too with close to a dozen posts here extolling my willingness to do the job despite having absolutely no qualifications.

I feel like I've been betrayed by Perkins, and if he ever acknowledges my existence, I'll give him an earful.

But to show that I have no hard feelings, I'd be willing to join Turner's staff-- or maybe his entourage.

Finally, a real coach for the players, not a parking attendant bully.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk, Go KU!

Congratulations Coach Gill and welcome to KU! Once again, Lew shows why Time Magazine named him the best sports manager in the world for 2008.

Can't wait for next season!

I will be intrigued to see how this pans out. I was reading so many negative comments and people bashing the man when he had not even set foot in Lawrence yet! I think everyone should support and give him a chance to show his stuff. It is nice to see all the comments so far as being positive and supportive for him.

PS Don't let my screen name fool you as I like seeing all Kansas universites excel!

What a class act and a great pick for KU.

There has been quite a bit of naysaying and I'm not quite sure why KU fans feel so entitled all of the sudden. Though from what I can tell, most of the negativity has been purely out of ignorance. Gill is a great coach and highly respected by many.

Welcome to Lawrence, Turner!

Great choice. I was for this since Mangino was let go. With a weak non-con schedule, Gill should get off to good start. 5-0 is realistic before Big 12 play.

Lance Cheney 5 years ago

A lot of people are looking at his 20-30 record (or whatever it is) at Buffalo, and running him down because of it. But that's a lot better record than what Buffalo had prior to his arrival there, so I think he must be doing something right.

Leslie Swearingen 5 years ago

Some time ago I bet a quarter that he would get the job and Grammaddy raised me a quarter. I forgot to reply back to her or I would have fifty cents. Oh, well, welcome to Lawrence Coach Gill. You are so right, outtahere, he is cute!

kuslaves sorry I am not getting it, what has this video, interesting as it is, got to do with Coach Gill?

greenworld 5 years ago

Since we never inserted Mangino as a linesman maybe we can make you are new QB.

We now have a new defense, their called the blueshirts.

Just tell me how I get my money back from those priority points donations. Wow!!!!!! I didn't realize we're settling for second best. Tubberville was begging to have an interview. NBC news said Gil has 3 things going for him; played in Big 12, daughter at KU, and from Texas. What the %$&*$#@ does any of that have to do with coaching???? We're the laughing stock now. Lew couldn't close the deal with Harbaugh and now he goes to back up plan. I hope the new Chancellor has the moxie to let Lew go when Gil falls flat. Lew, you let me down. I thought you rolled with those "big" contacts. This is all you could do???

riverdrifter 5 years ago

Time will tell if this is a good hire. I have no idea. I've always said that Lew should hire anybody he wanted so long as he's from Texas. It's a start...

JustNoticed 5 years ago

Nonsense, what's good about this?

No thread remotely connected to Mr. Gill will ever be without the hideous moniker, "Class Act". Really, doesn't it feel like jagged, splintered wooden spikes twisting in your ear?

And then, double badness, the best tee shirt EVER, no longer applies. "OUR COACH CAN EAT YOUR COACH"

baceman (Anonymous) says… "Wow!!!!!! I didn't realize we're settling for second best. Tubberville was begging to have an interview."

It's "Tuberville". If he was such a great coach, you'd know that. Tuberville was good, though, you're right.

"NBC news said Gil has 3 things going for him; played in Big 12, daughter at KU, and from Texas. What the %$&*$#@ does any of that have to do with coaching????"

It has a lot to do with coaching at KU...playing (and coaching) in the Big 12 and being from Texas means he knows the area. He'll be able to recruit well.

"We're the laughing stock now. Lew couldn't close the deal with Harbaugh and now he goes to back up plan."

Not really. Every media outlet I've heard report this has nothing but great things to say about Turner Gill.

"I hope the new Chancellor has the moxie to let Lew go when Gil falls flat. Lew, you let me down. I thought you rolled with those “big” contacts. This is all you could do???"

Why? Perkins has done the job he was hired to do: raise money for KUAC. In his time here, the Athletics budget more than doubled, almost all of which came from private donors. And notice that Mangino didn't actually start winning until after Lew Perkins arrived.

Tuberville would have been a retread (see Larry Smith at Mizzou).

Great hire.

But now we can wear shirts that read "our coach can fit in the back seat of a 2-door Saturn, or Geo Metro, if the situation arose."

baceman - You are correct, we are laughing stocks, and have been for quite some time, even with that Orange Bowl win. It will take many years of winning seasons to elevate KU football to a premeir program. To do that you better be able to recruit quality players. What did Harbaugh have going for him in the Big 12? A wife from Missouri? How about Tuberville? If he was so awesome, don't you think other programs would be talking to him? He's like the kid in gym class screaming, "pick me, pick me"!

greenworld 5 years ago

Why are people already being critical and this guy hasnt even coached a ku football game yet/??? I dont get it. On the bright side I dont see to many people making fun of him because he weighs 400 pds.

jaywalker 5 years ago

Good to see the majority of the posts thus far have been positive.

'Preciate your sentiments, willy wildcat. There were a number of the irrational negatives on earlier strings, but that's pretty much how it is with any big story; the people with an ax to grind will be the first and the loudest. The positives don't feel compelled to speak up.

My favorite t-shirt was " Our coach is PHAT!" This one really is!

just_another_bozo_on_this_bus 5 years ago

Well, I can understand that there is some disappointment since I was the sentimental favorite (mine, anyway,) but let's give Turner a chance to show what he's got, and after he's fired, I'm sure I'll still be available.

I was really against letting Mangenious go, and initially somewhat cool on Gill... but I'm beginning to see a bigger, longer-term picture, and I think all of these changes make sense.

Although we'll never be able to wear the our coach can eat your coach, I'm going to have trouble getting used to "The Fighting Gills" Just doesn't roll off the tongue quite right.

I hope the band dedicates Gloria Estefan's, "Go Away" to Lew Perkins

Well jumpin jahosaphats! KU has to go out and get an ex-Husker legend to help rebuild its ailing football program? My advice, discontinue that pathetic excuse for a football program and put the money into building a new fieldhouse! Rock Chalk Jayhawk NU!!!!!!!!!

I see fans liking Gill for at least the next two seasons. He should easily get them to bowl games both years, as they have the easy vs. the difficult Big 12 schedule next in 2010 and 2011..

I think if he goes 4-4 in the big 12 with a win over either K-St or Missouri or both, he will get a good enough bowl for the fans to like him.

If you are Oklahoma or Texas, you are expected to be at least 10-2, Nebraska, 9-3, now that the program has been rebuilt, KU should aspire to 8-4 or better to claim a really good year.

theron 5 years ago

I think part of the reason so many KU fans are skeptical of the hire is that they do not like Lew Perkins.

He was liked for awhile, and then when he made people donate to get season tickets, he became unpopular. There may be more to it than that, but I think that is the main reason why fans have soured on Lew.
