A 23-year-old Kansas University student reported early Sunday that he was the victim of an attempted aggravated robbery.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Ted Bordman, the victim told police he was walking at about 2:15 a.m. on Emery Road between Stratford Road and University Drive when a man approached him and demanded his wallet while brandishing a handgun.

The victim reportedly told the suspect he did not have anything in his wallet, at which point the suspect took off northbound from the scene. Bordman said an officer was in the area responding to an unrelated call during the incident, and the suspect might have been scared off after seeing police.

The victim did not lose any property or suffer any injuries during the attempted robbery.

Police flooded the area immediately after the call was dispatched but the suspect was not apprehended.

The suspect was described as a 19-to-20-year-old black male, standing 5-foot-9 and wearing unknown clothing.

Walking at 2:30 in the morning=greater chance at getting battered, assualted, raped, hit by a car, robbed, etc.

Get home earlier or get a conceal and carry license if you plan to walk the streets at that hour.

The only people out on the streets at that time of night are drunks, cops, thugs, homeless and idiots. I am going to reach here and assume you were either drunk or an idiot or probably both; congratulations on not getting shot.

Moral of the story: Change your nocturnal lifestyle or get armed.

If the robber's going to give up that easily, he'll never make anything of his life.

Obviously, this is not the victim's fault, but it shows the dangers of a larger city are fully manifest in Lawrence. Shooting a kid over a wallet seems a tad extreme, even for the right wing nuts of the day. A university city is 24/7 during the session; need to be vigilant and don't make yourself an easy target of crime any time of day. Groups versus self if at all possible, and always carry a phone. A dog is a good companion as well.

"the dangers of a larger city are fully manifest in Lawrence"

In a larger city, the victim may well have been shot for not giving the thug any money. Or shot after giving the thug his money.

thing, while i didn't put in a reference to the previous comment by outlaw, my comment was in reference to it

Yes, it's an assumption, my point was that if one is assuming the person to be drunk/idiotic, it may not be so good to advise them to carry a handgun...

If the victim had been drinking, kudos to him for NOT getting behind the wheel of a vehicle. Everything else, well, yes, it's a bit dangerous to be out walking around by yourself at night. This time it ended well.

thing,

I agree. He should not have been carrying a weapon in him even if he has a permit, LOL. I bet that would scare the robber away if you pulled a gun out of your butt. That clearly would not be someone to mess around with.

Open carry, people, sheesh, avoid the situation all together. What kind of creep is going to come up to you when he sees a hand cannon on your hip?

OOH, let me add my assumptions to the comment party....

The victim may have a night job. The victim may just be covering for losing his wallet. The victim is a brave fella for talking back to someone "brandishing" a handgun.

I wonder how a person can so easily can tell the approximate age of a person, yet have no clue about what they were wearing.
