Owner to rebuild cabin at Lakeview

Her family’s 113-year-old cabin can and will be replaced, but Fran Olin won’t ever recover her antique horse bits, father’s photograph or grandmother’s wedding nightgown lost in a blaze Tuesday morning.

“Thank goodness nobody was hurt,” Olin said Wednesday, of the fire that destroyed the Topeka resident’s cabin at 1081 N. 1860 Road, near the waterline at Lakeview Club northwest of Lawrence. “Whatever we can rebuild, we will.”

Wakarusa Township Fire Chief Chris Moore estimated damage to the cabin and its contents at $100,000. He lists the fire’s cause as undetermined, given the extensive damage.

A neighboring cabin — at 1083 N. 1860 Road, owned by Alan Boyle of Lawrence — suffered an estimated $10,000 to $15,000 in exterior damages, Moore said.

Olin’s cabin had been in the family since 1957.
