Lawrence man hospitalized after being hit by train; injuries called life-threatening

A 42-year-old Lawrence man was taken by air ambulance to Kansas University Hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit by an Amtrak passenger train Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews responded to the scene about 1 a.m. near East 1125 Road and North 1950 Road, west of Riverfront Park.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the crash, said the man was trespassing when the train hit him. Sgt. Steve Lewis said he was not authorized to release the man’s name.

Lewis said the man “didn’t get head on” and that he “wasn’t standing in front of the train when he got hit,” but Lewis said he could not provide further details about what exactly the man was doing before being hit.

Lewis said the man is considered a suspect in criminal trespassing. A condition update on the man was not available Wednesday.

Lewis identified the train conductor, who reported the incident, as Greg Perez.
