City survey issued to assess arts scene

The Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission wants your opinions.

The commission has posted a survey at the city’s Web site, www.lawrenceks.org, to gather input for its planning purposes.

“We haven’t had a long-term vision plan,” says Amy Kelly, the commission’s chairwoman. “We’d like Lawrence to be even more of an arts community. We think we’re an arts community, but when we compare it to a real arts community like Santa Fe (N.M.), we’re not there yet.”

Survey questions include:

• What is your greatest frustration maintaining and supporting art (whether visual, performance, etc.) in the community?

• For working artists: How do you typically find projects and resources to display/perform your work?

• How would you like to see the arts in Lawrence improve in the next 10 years?

In the short term, Kelly is hoping the survey can help advise the commission on how to appropriate an estimated $10,000 to $12,000 it has in its budget and needs to spend by the end of the calendar year.

The money typically is spent on the Outdoor Downtown Sculpture Exhibition. But commission members opted not to bring in a new group of sculptures this spring when it looked like their funding might be eliminated.

Kelly says members hope the survey helps them set priorities, both for the upcoming weeks and for the upcoming years.

“We’re here to encourage and celebrate the arts,” she says. “Money helps, but we’ll do potlucks if we have to.”
